And yet they are as genetically close to each other as it gets. Proportionality? What about skin color? Isn't that a drastic difference? Size-wise, the differences are measurable anyway.

Genetically, perhaps...but humans also share something like 98% of the same genes with chimpanzees...should we also make a criminal statistics analogy based on the behavior of chimps? "Close" only counts in horseshoes and hand gernades.
Aside from resistance to sunburn, skin color is generally cosmetic; the lbs/sq. in. crushing power of a pit bull's jaws compared with a chiwawa's isn't, nor is the average height, size, or weight of the individual dog breeds.
In general, white people are larger than asians. But they aren't three times larger.
[quote]As a dog owner, I know a bit about my dogs. The dog I raised from puppydom is a German Shepherd. he is most definitely predisposed to be aggressive towards strangers that encroach on his property. I did not train him this way. In fact we tried very hard to make him more docile whenever strangers come onto the property -- the pool man, court cleaners, gardeners, utilities technician, etc.

This goes back to my point about statistics being predictors of general trends, not individual behavior. Statistically, you did everything right to raise a well-behaved dog. Statiscally, your dog SHOULD have been docile. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way, even though based on statistics, it should have.
[quote]Every breed has a stereotypical temperament. Jack Russell Terriers are loud, obnoxious, and think they're the size of Mastiffs. Golden Retrievers are very playful. Bull Terriers are probably the most stubborn dogs on the planet. German Shepherds, Poodles and Border Collies are very trainable while other dogs are not.

I never said that dog breeds don't have individual characteristics. But humans aren't dog breeds.
[quote]Profiling will always exist, whether it's racial, socio-economic or whatever. Everybody does it. IRS audits, security checks, selling controlled substances.

Yes, it will be here. Profiling is an easy tool to use, and sometimes, in the case of the IRS, the only practical tool available. With all of the tax returns they process, the IRS obviously couldn't do a background check on every single individual to see who would be most likely to cheat on their taxes.
But profiling isn't an accurate tool. Take security checks, for example. Right now, people of Arabic appearence are being "profiled" at airports based on the 9/11 attacks. Well, guess what? Terrorists are insane, but they aren't stupid. Al Queda is a global network, not middle eastern. I remember a rumor shortly after the attack that Al Queda was specifcally recruiting non-Arabic looking operatives. Wanna bet that the terrorists who carry out the next attack won't look Islamic? Wanna bet that when the questions come after the attack, the people involved will claim that the terrorists didn't LOOK suspicious (i.e., Arabic)?
[quote]I can see it now...age profiling protests at the supermarket.

And a large Poodle could maul a kid to death too. It's frequency that matters. And socio-economics plays a role for sure, but denying mental predisposition may be PC, but it's also short-sighted.

I think it goes w/out saying that the reason you only hear about pitbulls on the news is because thats what makes it on the news. There are many dog attacks all of the time, but no one care if a golden lab nipped someone.

To say Reid doesn't look a bit Arab is ridiculous. Even Johnnie Walker Lindh played the part right. In Reid's case, his racial make-up created a look that closely imitates the a stereotypical Arab's + conditioning himself to look that way. he also apparently made no effort to look more Western. Hell, I'm full Chinese and I've been mistaken for evrything under the sun, from Arab to Indian to Mexican to half-white/half-asian.
MrBillData. When I was in Berkeley, my lab basically became Arab/Muslim Anti-Israel central. In fact, on our PCs. We've probably printed out 100 reams of propaganda for them, and I used to find amusing desktop backgrounds like a palestinian boy with a flag in on hand and a molotov cocktail in another jumping through bright orange flames.
I know a few black muslims but at least in the Bay Area there is no shortage of Arabs. There's also no shortage of Pashtuns like Pakistanis and Afghans in areas of Fremont and a few other pockets of the bay area.
"Every breed has a stereotypical temperament. Jack Russell Terriers are loud, obnoxious, and think they're the size of Mastiffs"
I have a mastiff - it thinks it is the size of a pug, and is afraid of everything. it weighs ~180 pounds. pathetic. I love that dog more than most people.

We're getting bogged down in this Richard Reid Arabic thing, which is my fault and I shouldn't have brought 9/11 up...
But to answer your question, yes, I don't think he looks Arabic. There are large pockets of Arabic communities here as well, and I see them all the time. Reid's facial features (eyes, brow, chin and jaw line, head shape) are completely different. He looks more like a scraggly Greek than an Arab.
Oh, and that Arabic description you gave above also fits Samoans, Tahitians, Guamanians, some Filipinos, and probably several other ethnicities.
[quote]Hell, I'm full Chinese and I've been mistaken for evrything under the sun, from Arab to Indian to Mexican to half-white/half-asian.

Bingo, back to profiling! Like I said, it isn't accurate.
I've been mistaken for everything under the sun as well. I'm mixed Asian, which confuses the heck out of everyone, especially other Asians. Because of my name, I routinely get calls from telemarketers who think I speak Spanish. I get junk mail in Spanish for everything from CD subscriptions, to credit cards and "Spanish Fly" sex enhancers.
Now consider this. The people that are continually profiling us as Hispanic based on their preconceptions of what Mexicans look like ("Gee..doesn't look black...must be Mexican") are the same ones looking for suspicious Arabs. If they can't even distinguish between Asian and Hispanic, what makes you think that they can spot the Arab (assuming, for the sake of argument, that Al Qaeda IS stupid enough to execute their next operation with Arabic operative) Extremist who is doing his best not to be noticed?
And we're just talking about profiling based on ethnic physical appearences, which are observable characteristics. When we start attributing behavioral and criminal tendencies to ethnic races, things become even more complicated.
[quote]Oh, and that Arabic description you gave above also fits Samoans, Tahitians, Guamanians, some Filipinos, and probably several other ethnicities.

Samoans are big-boned. Filipinos typically have straight hair and oriental features. Other Polynesian people tend to be large and with ver stubby noses with hardly any bridge, not sharp and high bridged like what you see on Richard Reid.
As for profiling being inaccurate. It's not 100%, but that doesn't really matter. My cousin gets stopped at the x-ray machines all the time because he's half-white. He's got fairly dark complexion, with dark brown hair and a silly goatee, and he's not built like an Asian. He jokes about it. Is pride the only thing on the line?
? Pit Bull Terriers are NOT predisposed to being mean or viscious dogs. Dumbshit owners who like to keep people off their trailor park lot with a wild dog are the reason they got the bad rap - that and dog fighting.
Hell, every time I go to the local rescue shelter, there are literally two dozen pit bulls of one type or another in there - and they're all rescued from these assholes that breed and train the dogs to fight / be mean. These cock-suckers ought to be treated like gun runners and locked up for 15 years, because they distribute weapons, not dogs.
Our neighbor has a PBT puppy and the thing is nice as can be because they just raise it like a normal dog. Are they more aggressive in terms of not being afraid to walk all around the neighborhood and sniff people / pee on their potted flowers? Probably, but that doesn't make them inherently dangerous.
? We can't profile people the way we profile dog breeds. If you can't figure out the reasons why, you're retarded.
? The guys who crashed the van were almost certainly drunk (or at least the driver was). How else do you run entirely off the road onto the steps of building?
? Even if they were stoned out of their mind, they didn't deserve to die. They may have injured some people, but they didn't kill anyone, for starters.
? Doesn't really matter what the killer(s) look like - they were totally unjustified in their actions. Even if one of the guys in the van pulled a weapon during an ensuing dispute, the manner in which they were killed suggests it had nothing to do with self-defense or defending others.

All of my experience with pitbulls raised normally, which is ongoing, is that they are much more agressive than other dogs. As sweet as is the one now, He does protect his mamma with a vengence and has to bite new people at least once before he accepts them as friends. Suprisingly enough, he has lots of friends, but that probably because his mamma's so wonderful
