I've been to the riverwalk 3 or 4 times now. And for the life of me I can't figure out what the hell everyone thinks is so great about it. It's a freaking sidewalk next to a slow moving, brown 'river' that isn't even that large or impressive. It's not freaking venice or anything, I just don't get it.

I found it to be really nice calm, and the trees provided nice shade. It's not something you get in the downtown of every big city. It is very unusual. It is nice too because it is below street level so there is no traffic around; just people and shops. Well, you don't have to like it, but I do.

oh, and ill also add that i enjoy san antonio and the areas around austin (austin itself sucks ass). but the hill country is quite nice (for texas, anyway).
so there are some pleasant parts of this state, but most of it is pretty shitty...

it's not that bad. i've lived in worse places. oklahoma for one. what a backwards assed state.
California has no wide open space? Dude, just go inland 40 miles anywhere between SF and LA. Once you get over the hills you either hit flat farmland/fields or desert.
Wide open space sucks anyway. If I couldn't live near a coast, great lake or huge river I think I would go insane.

2 or 3 posts up, i said all that already.
its obvious he's never seen any of california, just what a tour or somethin told him to see. the real state is very beautiful if you ever drive through it. it has every environment and climate there is, ranging from desert to snow, from forests to beaches.. texas doesnt have that much diversity, but thats alright. at least we have the best beach in the country, good ol galveston.
I think I should get to settle this since I have been to Portland, Texas, and I live in California.
First of all G4Dude is right that Portland has the worst infrastructure I have ever seen. It is also a pretty ugly city as well. Finally some dude yelled at me for trying to pump my own gas!
Overall Texas wasn't too bad. The only things I didn't like relate to me being a Californian.
1) Texas has truly scary Christian Coalition dudes. Please understand that I am male, white, Republican and Christian, so when I say these guys are scary, that it is not a biased position. I met several dozen of these nice Texans at the last Republican National Convention. They were tall (with even taller hats) had large belt buckles, and wouldn't crack a smile to save their lives.
2) Texas doesn't have California's anti-smoking laws... and likely never will.
Sorry, normally I am pretty liberterian about things, but after living in Cali a while and then going somewhere else, you realize how nice we have it here with regard to avoiding smokers. I didn't care about the smoking laws here, then drove cross country, came back and now I am a anti-smoking freak! In Texas it is like California circa 1983 or something with like 80% of every public place covered with little tin ashtrays, and like 20% (in the worst corner) reserved for nonsmokers.
1) He's an Aggie. I'm not sure if we can classify them as humans.
2) He's lived in the two worst cities in the state (Houston and Collie Station).
I hate Houston, I just hate that freakin' city. The only southern city I hate more is Atlanta. It's big and dirty and sprawling and filled with morons.
Austin traffic gets bad, but that's essentially the only downside. The town has culture (Houston: "What?") and history (Houston: "What?") and people that aren't cookie cutter images of the person standing next to them (Houston: "What?"). If you like vast expanses of concrete, pollution, oil refineries, chain restaurants Houston is your town.

Well, going to an RNC meeting in Texas is scary to think about, like going to a meeting of the local Zapatistas in Cali.

I hear you on this point, I cannot stand cigarette smoke. It's a disgusting habit that irritates the hell out of everyone else around you. Down with smoking!
Fortunately for me, smoking is passe for the most part here in central Austin.

It's not so bad, I've been working hard recently to get myself addicted to cigarettes. It's actually harder than I thought, it takes determination and a regular schedule of forced smoke breaks. I wanna be cool like Joe Camel.

ok dipshit, iv'e lived in east LA, san francisco, palo alto, san jose, and los altos in addition to texas. each of those cities have more "history" and "culture" than austin, and have more diverse and interesting people than yer shitty city. yes, houston sucks. i'm not disputing that. my point is that all the cities in this state suck. shit, we still consider el paso a part of texas, and thats gotta be the ugliest, dirtiest place i've ever been to. all in all, this state is quite boring and miserable in ANY city. i'm not a cowboy, i dont listen to country music, and i dont drive a truck. i'm not even native to this damn state. and im not just saying all this based as an "aggie." you know that i'm here because its the best vet school around, NOT because im a hick. i couldhave gone to just about any school in the country. but i chose a&m because it had what i needed. so stop giving me shit and discretiting me based on that. you are well aware that not all aggies are the same, just as i am aware that not all horns are queer. yer city's nothing special. get over yourself. if you ever went to either of the coastal cities, you'd realize that this entire state is crap.
sorry fer my rant, i'm not really that annoyed. just felt like bitching.
awww, da widdle aggie got all bent out of shape. I think the rat was just joking with you, maybe he should have used shorter sentences with aggie safe words (no more than 2 syllables).
