Ya, we really need to go to mars. Russia came out with a plan recently but I think we said it was too ambitionus. I think it will probably have to handled by private parties though. I too used to be into this stuff. I spent a couple of weeks at the Space Academy (read: Advanced Space Camp) in Huntsville and really had a great time, except my group sucked and we crashed the shuttle into the ISS eventhough I was shouting that we needed to come in slower, oh well... Anyhoo, I've realized that there are too many people out there that consider NASA a waste of money so I know that Mars will never happen in my lifetime.

The is "Lost Moon" by Jim Lovell and some assistant, Kluger or somebody.

"A Man on the Moon," the basis of the HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" is good too.

I've been humming the Apollo 13 music for two days now and couldn't figure out why. I guess because it's just so good. I probably heard a snippet on a commercial or something.

The whole NASA/Apollo saga started to fascinate me about 10 years ago. It was such a terrific human effort, demonstrating the power of working together AND the necessity of strong individuals (the astronauts). When I went to JSC in Houston in July, I wanted to SCREAM at the lost potential. Cool tour, though, if you get the chance. The Spaceship Gallery in Space Center Houston starts off with a movie about the "good old days". It's narrated by Gene Krantz. Not some fancy hotshot type -- but the guy in the vest. Pretty cool.
