The key to these MBPs will be the features in the hardware that will support Lion. Will there be some kind of merger between OS X and iOS? Support for touch, the ability to run iPhone/iPad apps?

The announcement isn't supposed to be until Thursday and yet third party dealers could get stock as soon as today. And then pre warning them about it and wrapping it with tape etc that makes it pretty obvious that it is something Apple. AND someone leaking that so now the world knows if they see a package like that it is a new thing and hey you should steal it etc.

I can't buy it at face value. Sorry. Now a box of that poster stuff they like to do perhaps that announces you can pre-order/reserve whatever. And is do not open until. Okay that I could buy. Apple announces on thursday. Prehaps online orders start Friday with stock in stores mid next week. That seems more like it. Or even pre-order/reserve for a set release date on x in 2-3 weeks. Maybe new laptops, maybe a new dual iPad that would leak out of the FCC anyway. Hell maybe both. Laptops in stock next week. iPads top of next month or something.

but keep in mind that Apple has been mixing it up with small on campus events in front of local press (that needs a days notice at most) and live streaming. They could do that this time as well. Particularly if it is a few days in advance of actual release. The blogs etc will pick up the slack with their articles and get the word out just the same as when they were present in the big off site hall with the wifi problems and the calendar leaks

Nothing wrong with that. Apple likes to make product available for purchase immediately after annoucment, and simualtaneously available to every reseller. The only way to do that on a global scale is to prefill distribution channel with products before launch. Otherwise, low end resellers will have to wait weeks to get their hand on the product in some area.

Yet another example of how police states can often engender criminal activity as much as they stop it.

I'd like to know your evidence for the assertion. Homeland Security minimum wage idiots at airports stealing stuff from passenger bags, sure. But I've seen no reports of companies complaining that Customers or Homeland Security have been stealing their goods as they come into the United States. The U.S. is one of the few places in the world where you don't have to pay bribes to get product across the border.

On the other hand, when I worked for a large publisher and we used to ship our computers back and forth to trade shows using PRIVATE shippers, we used to lose equipment often. And not that I think the carriers in the U.S. are very dishonest - I think overall, FedEx, UPS and the others do a great job and are generally reputable.

The U.S. is not a police state. We're too disorganized and incompetent to be a police state. That's not to say that there aren't governmental abuses, but people who cry "police state" are usually fanatics who think having to get a driver's license or having rules against polluting the water supply demonstrates fascist intent.

Why "supposed to be until Thursday?" Apple has not said it will be Thursday. Thursday is just somebody's guess. I am guessing it will be Tuesday (or maybe Wednesday because of the US holiday on Monday). If the retailers are getting their stock today, would it not make sense for the announcement to be very soon after that? It is not like Apple to wait too long.

Yup, 99% by Tuesday. 100% by Wednesday.

I have the 250gb Momentum XT hybrid, and I'm finding about a 2:1 speed increase over my stock HDD. What're you seeing with the 500gb? I think it has 2 rw heads, so I've heard it may be faster.

I have seen a speed increase. My MBP with the stock 250GB 5400rpm used to boot in a little more than a minute (it was almost full). When I upgraded to the Momentum XT 500GB 7200rpm the boot time was less than 30 seconds. I've seen much better response and spotlight now shows the results immediately. It was really worth it and I hope Apple use those hybrid HDDs in their machines.
