New U2 song "Electrical Storm!!!"

The chorus is even simpler than "Beautiful Day," but while people can relate to beautiful days, electrical storms represent a more abstract idea. I like the song though, not quite Grammy award winning caliber like each of the singles from their last album, but good enough!

Oh yeah, I don't want to hear "U2 SUCKS." I'm talking about one song here.

I think I got that backwards... "beautiful days" are more abstract than "electrical storms." Damn. What am i saying again?

Is it just a sole, newly released single? Released today (it's Tuesday, after all)? New album on the way as well?

    I haven't heard it.

It's a single off the their latest 1990-200 Best of collection. The video is in black and white.

Have to say, it's Fvckin awesome stuff!

    On top form again.

Now, when are they gonna release those great concert videos on DVD? ie. Zoo TV live in Sydney.

Rattle and Hum is on DVD, as well as Elevation Boston. Both are excellent (Especially on my 15.2 inch screen)

I think it's amazing that they've had 4 consecutive singles win grammy awards. They were robbed of the Album of the Year by a compilation disc. (Just opened myself up to U2 SUCKS comments now, didn't I)

Personally, I think the grammy's are insults to self-respecting artists. It's all about popularity and we all know how smart most people are. But I like U2 nonetheless.

I want to hear the full version of that song, "The Hands That Built America." I hear their next album will be something like an ATYCLB II type album, although if Electrical Storm is any indication, I don't know...

I just saw the video early this morning. Didn't sound very U2-ish, except for Bono's voice.

An okay song, I guess. Kinda draggy and swirly. Not my favorite one of theirs, for sure.

My favorite U2 songs are "Bad" (off "The Unforgettable Fire") and one that The Edge sang called "Van Diemen's Land", off of "Rattle and Hum".

Beautiful song and melody. Just stark and powerful. And I like it when other members of a band, besides the lead singer, sing. A nice change and surprise, sometimes.

My favorite Stones songs are all ones that Keith sings ("Before They Make Me Run", "Little T&A", "You Got the Silver", etc.).

There are two versions of the song floating around.

One, where you hear an accustic beginning.

And the single version where it is more electric guitar.

There are many, very blatant references to 9/11/01 in there.
  • Reply 13 of 26
I love the song but like the version would the cool guitar playing at the end.

and how about pearl jam's new song I am Mine!? I can't stop listening to it. can't wait for the new album in november

I didn't consider the song's context yet. It just became more relevant to me now. Thanks for your observation.

Can you point out some of the corellations you've observed?

    Certainly.

The most obvious parts to me, are:

[quote]"On rainy days we'd go swimming out

On rainy days / Swimming The Sound"

This line is rather innocuous unless you have a Southern New England or Southern New York mindset. Living in Connecticut for almost 20 years you know 'The Sound' is a common way of saying 'Long Island Sound'. The large body of water that seperates Connecticut from Long Island and the place many, many people from New York City and the surrounding region swim in the summer. This merely sets the location for the rest of the song.

    [quote]You're in my mind

    All of the time

    I know that's not enough

    If the sky can crack

There must be some way back

    For love and only love

At first it may seem as if someone is wishing for the one they love to come back to them. When you read closely you can see that it is actually someone who wants to get back, but can't. Through events beyond their control, they've been seperated, and they would do just about anything to go and be with the one they love.

    [quote]"Electrical storm

    Electrical storm

    Electrical storm

    Baby don't cry"

"Electrical Storm" can be a euphemism for a difficut, tumultuous situation.

[quote]"It's hot as hell, high, in this room

Sure hope the weather will break soon

The air is heavy, heavy as a truck

Hope the rain will wash away our bad luck"

This one sort of speaks for itself. This can easily be interpreted as a reference to those poor souls trapped on the upper floors of the World Trade Center.

    [quote]"The sky can crack

There must be some way back

    For love and only love

    Electrical storm

    Electrical storm

    Electrical storm

    Baby don't cry

    Baby don't cry

    Oh baby don't cry

    Oh baby don't cry"

Once again, the person here is saying to themselves that there must be a way out, there must be a way back to that person they love who is somewhere they can't be.

Then, we have more references to the tumult they are in, followed, finally, by the person pleading for the one they love not to be sad, not to cry, to learn to deal with it despite the fact they both know they will never see each other again. The person here is not getting out, they are not coming back and it's time to say goodbye.

Wow. How do you regard this song when compared to other songs that reference 9/11?

I like U2 plenty but this doesn't compare with what Springsteen offers on "The Rising". U2's song is too opaque for me. Bono often does this. He starts to write about something and then veers away. If you're going to talk about 9/11, you should talk about it. And the subject is way too big to be dealt with in just one song anyway.

    Some of Springsteen?s words...

    [quote]I don't remember how I felt

    I never thought I'd live

    To read about myself

    In my hometown paper

    How my brave young life

    Was forever changed

In a misty cloud of pink vapor

    Darlin' give me your kiss

    Only understand

    I am, the nothing man

Around here, everybody acts the same

Around here, everybody acts like nothing's changed

Friday night, the club meets at Al's Barbecue

The sky's still, the same unbelievable blue

    Darlin' give me your kiss

    Come and take my hand

    I am, the nothing man

... almost move me to tears.

    INTO THE FIRE

The sky was falling and streaked with blood

I heard you calling me, then you disappeared into the dust

Up the stairs, into the fire

Up the stairs, into the fire

I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher

Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

May your strength give us strength

May your faith give us faith

May your hope give us hope

May your love give us love

    repeat chorus

You gave your love to see, in fields of red and autumn brown

You gave your love to me and lay your young body down

Up the stairs, into the fire

Up the stairs, into the fire

I need you near, but love and duty called you someplace higher

Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

    chorus (3X)

It was dark, too dark to see, you held me in the light you gave

You lay your hand on me

Then walked into the darkness of your smoky grave

Up the stairs, into the fire

Up the stairs, into the fire

I need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higher

Somewhere up the stairs, into the fire

    chorus

    I am, the nothing man

    You can call me Joe

Buy me a drink and shake my hand

    You want courage

I'll show you courage you can understand

    The pearl and silver

    Restin' on my night table

It's just me Lord, pray I'm able

    Darlin, with this kiss

    Say you understand

    I am, the nothing man

    I am, the nothing man

    EMPTY SKY

    I woke up this morning

    I could barely breathe

    Just an empty impression

In the bed there you used to be

I want a kiss from your lips

I want an eye for an eye

I woke up this morning to the empty sky

    Empty sky, empty sky

I woke up this morning to an empty sky

    Empty sky, empty sky

I woke up this morning to an empty sky

    Blood on the streets

    Blood flowin' down

I hear the blood of my blood

    Cryin' from the ground

    Empty sky, empty sky

I woke up this morning to an empty sky

    Empty sky, empty sky

I woke up this morning to an empty sky

    On the plains of Jordan

I cut my bow from the wood

    Of this tree of evil

    Of this tree of good

I want a kiss from your lips

I want an eye for an eye

I woke up this morning to the empty sky

    Empty sky, empty sky

I woke up this morning to an empty sky

    Empty sky, empty sky

I woke up this morning to an empty sky

    Empty sky, empty sky

I woke up this morning to an empty sky

    WORLDS APART

I hold you in my arms, that's when it starts

I seek faith in your kiss, and comfort in your heart

I taste the seed upon your lips, lay my tongue upon your scars

But when I look into your eyes, we stand worlds apart

Where the distant oceans sing, and rise to the plain

In this dry and troubled country, your beauty remains

Down from the mountain roads where the highway rolls to dark

'Neath Allah's blessed rain, we remain worlds apart

Sometimes the truth just ain't enough

Or it's too much in times like this

Let's throw the truth away, we'll find it in this kiss

In your skin upon my skin, in the beating of our hearts

May the living let us in, before the dead tear us apart

We'll let blood build a bridge, over mountains draped in stars

I'll meet you on the ridge, between these worlds apart

We've got this moment now to live, then it's all just dust and dark

Let love give what it gives

Let's let love give what it gives

    THE FUSE

Down at the court house they're ringin' the flag down

Long black line of cars snakin' slow through town

Red sheets snappin' on the line

With this ring will you be mine

    The fuse is burning

    (Shut out the lights)

    The fuse is burning

(Come on let me do you right)

Trees on fire with the first fall's frost

Long black line in front of Holy Cross

Blood moon risin' in a sky of black dust

Tell me baby who do you trust?

    The fuse is burning

    (Shut out the lights)

    The fuse is burning

(Come on let me do you right)

Tires on the highway hissin' something's coming

You can feel the wires in the tree tops hummin'

    Devil's on the horizon line

    Your kiss and I'm alive

A quiet afternoon, an empty house

On the edge of your bed you slip off your blouse

The room is burning with the noon sun

Your bittersweet taste on my tongue

    The fuse is burning

    (Shut out the lights)

    The fuse is burning

(Come on let me do you right)

    YOU'RE MISSING

Shirts in the closet, shoes in the hall

Mama's in the kitchen, baby and all

    Everything is everything

    Everything is everything

    But you're missing

Coffee cups on the counter, jackets on the chair

Papers on the doorstep, but you're not there

    Everything is everything

    Everything is everything

    But you're missing

Pictures on the nightstand, TV's on in the den

Your house is waiting, your house is waiting

For you to walk in, for you to walk in

But you're missing, you're missing You're missing when I shut out the lights

You're missing, when I close my eyes

You're missing, when I see the sun rise

    You're missing

Children are asking if it's alright

Will you be in our arms tonight?

Morning is morning, the evening falls I got

Too much room in my bed, too many phone calls

    How's everything, everything?

    Everything, everything

    You're missing, you're missing

God's drifting in heaven, devil's in the mailbox

I got dust on my shoes, nothing but teardrops

    THE RISING

Can't see nothin' in front of me

Can't see nothin' coming up behind

I make my way through this darkness

I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me

Lost track of how far I've gone

How far I've gone, how high I've climbed

On my back's a sixty pound stone

On my shoulder a half mile of line

Come on up for the rising

Come on up, lay your hands in mine

Come on up for the rising

Come on up for the rising tonight

    Left the house this morning

    Bells ringing filled the air

Wearin' the cross of my calling

On wheels of fire I come rollin' down here

    chorus

    Li,li, li,li,li,li, li,li,li

There's spirits above and behind me

Faces gone black, eyes burnin' bright

May their precious blood bind me

Lord, as I stand before your fiery light

    Li,li, li,li,li,li, li,li,li

I see you Mary in the garden

In the garden of a thousand sighs

There's holy pictures of our children

Dancin' in a sky filled with light

May I feel your arms around me

May I feel your blood mix with mine

A dream of life comes to me

Like a catfish dancin' on the end of my line

Sky of blackness and sorrow (a dream of life)

Sky of love, sky of tears (a dream of life)

Sky of glory and sadness (a dream of life)

Sky of mercy, sky of fear (a dream of life)

Sky of memory and shadow (a dream of life)

Your burnin' wind fills my arms tonight

Sky of longing and emptiness (a dream of life)

Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life

    chorus

    Li,li, li,li,li,li, li,li,li

    Sorry, Applenut.

Spaceman, how do you know how Bono writes his songs? Or are declaring that they lack focus or depth?

Springstein's works aren't really that sophisticated compared to U2's. The beauty of U2 is that they appeal to a wide range of people. The Edge has lambasted Radiohead for making such a great album, Kid A, appeal to such a small percentage of listeners. What you comment about is really U2's depth. They can make a song about love be interpreted as that or something else going on in the world at the time. It isn;t half and half as you say, it's rather both at the same time. Maybe you have issues interpreting both meanings separarately. BS is pretty straightforward in that regard.

No. You just proved my point that Bruce Springstein is more straightforward than Bono. You can probably go on to say that he's less creative as well...
