Maybe the movie wasn't really underrated, but still, I must have seen it, what, 3-4 times now (which is quite a lot for any movie in my case) and it keeps getting better.
John Goodman is simply perfect. He is so...
Then Jeff Bridges. The Dude. He makes you laugh and cry. Not to forget Steve Buscemi. 'Shut the **** up, Donny.'
This movie... it transports me to somewhere.
I mean, the shot where the Dude is on his rug listening to bowling noises.
Or the dreams he has, these three guys with big scissors running behind him. That is some classy stuff.
Or them scattering Donnie's ashes.
This movie is definitely underrated. How many Oscars did it get? That's what I mean.
A movie I'd definitely recommend putting on the rental list is The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys. Just saw it and really enjoyed.
Another underrated film is The Bad Lieutennant. Dark and disturbing it really takes at least three viewings just to get past how ****ed up it is. By the fourth or fifth viewing you'll be able to start delving into the depth of the story and you'll finally be able to deal with Harvey Keite'l's full frontal scene.
Since we're in the holiday season, my vote is for "One Magic Christmas" with Mary Steenbergen (sp?). It's a Disney live-action movie from about 15 years ago, and really puts the holidays in perspective; but the message in it is good year-round. I recommend it for your family this season.
Excalibur and Blade runner are not exactly what i will called underrated movies. They are classics.
Excalibur is the best of all movies speaking of the arthurians legends, it's a real masterpiece. I have seen it several times, and i still love it. The lyrical dimension of this movie is huge. It's one of my favorite film.
Blade runner is a fantastic moovie of SF. This is also a masterpiece and a brilliant vision of a possible future. Ridley Scott is a master of the 7th art.
The big Lebowski is a great moovie, the more you see it the more you will appreciate it. Perhaps he is underrated, however the critics in France where really good.
Only just saw this: somebody named this before me. Well, my original reaction stays.
Goes to show that he wasn't kidding: the dude actually DOES abide.

Speaking of which, I'd have to say I think Steve Buscemi deserves a little more credit. Satchmo already named Fargo. Truly wonderful movie. Steve sitting in the car with this iceman killer who doesn't talk, and then he saying he can be silent too, 'total ****ing silence' (that is one of the most underrated SCENES ever).
Of course, he plays his role in the Big Lebowski truly wonderfully.
Did anybody notice his appearance in 'Billy Madison'? That made the otherwise shitty movie a real work of art (IMO). That's another one of the most underrated scenes ever. You'll have to see it, I don't care to explain.

About Excalibur. I put that on my list because I've never seen any positives written about it. I believe it's one of the best. When my wife first saw it, she thought it was PERFECT. No one I know of really likes it too much. Which I find odd.
To Live and Die in LA. Definitely one of the best and most underated flicks out there. Go rent it. It stars a young William L Petersen of current CSI fame.
terrible moovie, it made me sick to waste two hours of my life
underated movie, that happens also to be a true masterpiece:
Terrence Mallick's The Thin Red Line
also I just saw the remake of Solaris
Soderbergh's version.... I hate to admit it cause I think he is overrated as a director but this was a good movie:
nearly everybody in the audience hated it . . .they expected some hollywood action SCi Fi . . . . but having seen the Tarkovsky version about ten times I knew what to expect . . . its a profound movie . . . I like Tarkovskies ending a little better though.

Anyway, and I know I'll probably take some flak for this, but I thought Popeye got a panning it didn't really deserve.

This scene had me pissing my pants in laughter!
And of course you can't forget Buschemi's great performance in Reservoir Dogs.
"...why do I have to be Mr. Pink?"
