Why aren't they just happy to have my subscription? If I have to give them personal information, then they won't have my subscription. Bloodsuckers.
Because your subscription money isn't what they live on. Just how you don't see the same ads during a football game as you do during a soap opera, advertisers need to know where to place their ads.

You blew it on this example, disproving your entire point. Thanks!
Just like with TV advertisements, advertisers can make the exact same decisions about which periodicals they want to advertise in, based on the content itself without requiring individual user profiles! This is how it's been done for decades on TV, and there's no reason it can't work like this with digital subscriptions as well. If they're able to eke out some add'l personal data from some people (just like magazine insert mail-in surveys), that's just icing on the cake for them, NOT a requirement.
I hate to say it, but you really come off sounding like an advertising industry shill.

Well it is easy to figure out who's reading Cosmo or Men's Health, but not all magazines/newspaper is it easy to know who the audience is. You probably dont get the same ads on your facebook as your significant other does.
