No one's thinking gear ratios when they are riding. Big gear is for down hill/flat. Middle is for mixed terrain and the granny gear is for up steep stuff. Plus when you forget to shift before the hill you can pop into the granny much easier than cranking up the rear cluster.

But looking at how most people ride it?s clear that they have no ****ing clue how to use the gears correctly. So it?s all moot.

But the reason I thought of has to do with the mechanics. On many bikes if you make the chain long enough to fit over the largest of the front and rear gears then you may have the chain sliding across itself when using the two smallest. Also at that point the chain has a lot of slack that the rear derailleur may not be able to suck up. So then your chain starts to slap and next thing you know you?re popping your chain back on. Also when you have the chain on the two largest (outermost front to innermost rear) the chain has to travel far from left to right and it doesn?t always function so well. The newer stuff might be better. GripShift got a lot better so ?

7 speeds can ne fine. Gotta have the granny gear though.

There's one of those parked in the <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=10&t=003456"; target="_blank">Old Town </a>parking lot all the time. It's like a big, motorized, yellow sock.

Hassan, you have excellent taste. You've even sparked my interest so far as contact the (only) dealer here in the US. The Amsterdam would also look very good with my lovely girl riding next to me!

A transaxle instead of chains...I don't think that's progress at all...

    In Cannondale's defense, the R5000si is a <a href="http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/03/cusa/model-3RR5K.html"; target="_blank">nice looking bike. Functional too...</a> Similarly, the Scalpel Team <a href="http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/03/cusa/model-3VP4.html"; target="_blank">gets my juices goin'.</a> I have an old ('97-'98) F500 sitting in my basement.

I've never been a fan of those Lefty Forks. I dunno why, but the concept is just stupid to me.

Have you ever ridden one? I love the concept, but I can't vouch for ride quality.

Why do you love the concept? It unbalances the bike, and I've never seen proof that the one thick shaft is beefier than a regular triple crown fork.

<a href="http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/innovation/carbonlefty.html"; target="_blank">Cannondale's</a> spin on things. Lightweight, long travel, and cool. But I haven't ridden it yet to vouch for the ride quality.

Does anyone remember when cannondale started shipping that "CODA" crap. Recycled Diacomp shit. They lost me when they did that. They don't still ship that crap do they?

Hmm. Yeah I remember. Were they really that bad? I thought CODA bar ends were cool when they were in vogue.

Yes it was that bad. The sifters and levers and all that stuff sucked. Just a bad move to increase the margin.

I guess they stopped using it.
