i don't get why twitter rubs so many folks the wrong way; it's just like texting but to multiple people, even has the same char limits.
just because the iphone has texting capabilities, does it mean apple is forcing you to text? it'll be the same with tweeting; use it or not, up to you.
The issue people here are wrestling with is always having Twitter button there every time they try to copy and paste something even though they aren't at all social network-y. As long as it can be turned off they'll be fine. I don't use FB but I use Twitter, so I'll want to be turning off FB.
Nobody is forcing you to tweet. You will probably be able to tweet a link, or your photo, without an app. If you are not on twitter, you probably wont care.
It's funny and actually kind of reassuring to see that I'm not the only one who's really hoping Apple will not try to make the iPhone some kind of 'social networking hub' and pollute my smartphone experience trying to cram Twitter, Facebook or whatever social networking thing is hip and trendy down my throat. I don't want nothing of that.
That said, I can't deny that apparently that's what kids expect and almost demand from their phones these days, so if Apple want's to keep them on-board they have little choice to offer some of that. I just sincerely hope they understand that their current demographic (with actual disposable income to afford iPhones) is still largely in the pre-Facebook/Twitter-hype-generation.
a) They are not going to continue with that demographic alone.
b) if you dont have twitter none of this can ever affect you.
a) That's what I said, the facebook/twitter generation will be their target demographic for the next 20 years so I understand it's important to keep them interested in iPhones, even though most of them won't be able to afford one today
b) Unless you have a crystal ball, you can't be 100% sure. Look at some of the SE Xperia phones, their whole interface is one big 'friend stream' that affects every bit of the phone experience. Or Windows Phone 7, which reserves screen space and extra pages full of content that is automatically inserted from your Twitter or Facebook account in the e-mail and phone book. Admittedly, on WP7 it looks kind of nice, but I still don't want it because I don't use Twitter or Facebook, but the screens are still there.
But I agree Apple is not the kind of company stupid enough to ruin the iPhone with stuff I might not want to use.
Personally - not that anyone cares - I've moved from Twitter to Facebook. The ability to hold a threaded conversation/comment chain is the killer feature to me.
I'm guessing this means Apple's Ping is dead? Although Ping is supposed to be about music.
I just don't care about this and don't understand why anyone else should either.
I will never send a Tweet in my life. I don't understand the entire concept of sending out 140 bytes of meaningless trivia about your own life that no one else should care about. And I especially don't understand re-tweeting other people's tweets. (Of course, I don't understand why YouTube posters repost content that is already on YouTube either.)
But obviously, millions of people do care about Twitter and therefore, such functionality is beneficial (to them). There's lots of functionality and/or apps on my computer that I will never use. In fact, I doubt I would even use the supposed iCloud service. It doesn't mean they shouldn't be there.
Besides, if you don't have a Twitter account, I can't imagine you would even be aware that the functionality exists.

I was wondering the same thing--do real people that are not named Ashton Kutcher or Sarah Palin or do not work at CNN actually use Twitter?
I don't know. I've never used it, I don't even know how it works, never visited a site, or 'tweet' or whatever. Just heard a bit about it. Sounds stupid for everything except monitoring disaster events.
While I completely agree with you about social networking being crammed down our throats, I'm sure a lot of people will love this/find it useful. I was hoping to stay off these sites, but more and more everyday I'm just thinking if you can't beat em join em. I hope they offer a way to disable it as well!
You know what! Screw it I'll never join one of these social networking sites and be sucked into them! It's just not me
And yet here you are, 21 posts deep into the AppleInsider forums. Welcome to our social networking site

Ahhh! You got me ! I kept thinking that while I was typing! Though back in 2006 or 2007, I can't remember which, I tried facebook out and said no thanks! It was an act of congress to get my account actually deleted, instead of disabled. I like this site! No peoples pictures to comment on or people to poke

The news is not Twitter integration, but a contextual system-wide services menu for Apps in general.
Forget Twitter. What the Photo app need are:
1. Ability to created new album and rename existing one
2. Ability to move pictures from album to album.
3. Shared album where you move/copy pictures into it and it will appear real-time at your friend's devices.
4. Saved album for the pictures saved from the web.
5. Separate video album.
...
I like your style.

App adds services contextual menu. I don't care if they added nothing to iOS 5 as long as they make Mobile Me free.
We would still be on iOS 1.0 with a few tweaks, were you CEO.

You're full of it.
iOS 5 is also rumored to include "deep" voice command integration.
This is bad news for women and pre-teen boys. perhaps they should provide support for people who do not have deep voices.

i'm pretty sure this is already possible... iOS seems to know when I want to add stuff to dropbox... (while is safari, for example).
but maybe that is some other non-system-wide voodoo.

Twitter stream from future iOS user:
- Checking e-mail.
- Got 14 new e-mails.
- Deleted 11 junk e-mails.
- Playing Gorillaz The Fall.
- Logged on to facebook.
- Purchased Angry Birds on The App Store
- Bookmarked Appleinsider.
- Liked a comment on facebook.
- Changed keyboard layout to English (UK)
etc...
Came here to post this.

But seriously, I'm sure Apple and Twitter worked out some kind of revenue sharing deal, though I can't imagine revenue from what source. iAds?
