I think the reason that people call the police is that it can be difficult to confront a party of drunken rowdy people and tell them to shut up. At worst, you could get beaten up.

I don't know what it's like where you live, but I wouldn't be knocking on random doors my building in NYC.

And usually, if you're nice to the police, they're nice to you. It's happened to me a couple times, usually when we don't notice how late it has gotten. The police come, say "Sorry to bother you, but there's been a complaint, could you turn the music down." and that's it.

You know, I've been on both sides (annoyee and annoyer) . We had the cops show up at our apartment door 10:30 one night. Someone had called in a complaint of a baby crying. Well, the baby had been in bed since 8 pm and she was not a crier.

But we also had a teenage neighbor who like to play his music loud. It wasn't all THAT loud and during the winter things were fine. It was during the summer that it got irritating, because his one window, where he played his music, feed into every window in our apartment. To shut out the music, we had to close ALL our windows. And I'm sorry, that wasn't practical, and to top it off, I really don't like Rap music. He wouldn't answer the door (he was a teenager), so I tried to make the point that musical taste varies: I blared "Scotland the Brave"--yes, bagpipes--out the window at him. I don't think he got the point--if he could hear it. Like I said, it was only one window in his apartment. But in the end we didn't call the cops. We just told his Mom.
