So... looks like the Sens are a bit desperate for grit, they deal for Rob "'nother thug" Ray, and no wonder considering that the Leafs handed it to them the other week. Granted, that's pretty much all the Leafs bring to the table now aside from Sundin and maybe Mogilny if you catch him at the right time, but that might be good enough to get them to the conference final -- and lose.
I was hoping the Devils woulddeal for Satan, but was afraid of what they would have to give up. Well, they get two big non-scorer's forwards to beef up a fourth line, thought Marshall and certainly Smehlik have some scoring potential. I can see why Lamorillo might not want Satan, as they have so many small and younger forwards, and Satan hasn't really proven a lot in the playoffs.
The Leafs actually scare me a little now with Nolan and Glen Wesley. But I'll still tell you "they suck" if you ask me in public.
I think the Sens waited too long to get something good done. Rob Ray makes great ESPN commercials, but he's not going to make their defense any better really. All he's going to do is get goaded into penalties.
The other team that's scaring the crap out of me (bastards that they are) is Philly. They're *this close* to getting Tony Amonte for basically some draft picks. If that happens, you can forget it. They'll win the east. Bob Clarke is an ass, but I must admit they've made some good moves this season.
Out west the Avalanche greatly solidified their chances with the addition of Marchment, who is a dirty bastard but also a damn good defenseman and a guy some offensive types will skate gingerly around instead of doing what they're supposed to do. This team is starting to remind me of the Avs team that had Claude Lemiuex and won the cup a few years back. Both a ton of offensive talent, and some really mean bastards on D. Now they no longer have to pair Foote and Blake on the same shifts to cover the other team's best guys. They'll have two pairings that can do it.
Looks like the only good thing that will come from this deadline is that Detroit waited too long and they're not going to get Aaron Miller. They had to settle for Mathieu Schneider and gave away their first round pick this year and second round pick next year. I think LA actually got the better end of the bargain. If they had traded Miller it would've been a wash.
What do you thnk of the Amonte trade? I can't say that he won't improve the Flyers, but I wonder if (and maybe my stong dislike of "Booby" Clarke s clouding my opinion) all these "names" in hockey add up to the whole team. I wonder what will happen to LeClair after this season too. The Flyers must have a bankroll like the Rangers.
Exactly. They're actually starting to remind me of the Rangers, only nobody is saying so right now because the Cryers are actually in the playoff race. The Rangers are just pathetic - there's nothing else you can say about them. A collection of talents to be sure, but not a team.
I think Amonte and Roenick will probably be placed on the same line in Philly; my recollection is they played together in Chicago a few years back but I could be wrong. My hope now is for Toronto and Philly to meet in the playoffs and beat the crap out of one another before going to Ottawa. Otherwise the Sens are in trouble. Rob Ray isn't going to be enough to get them through that scenario. I don't care what Al Morganti (the weenie) says.
The real question for the day is: which franchise has the greatest salary dumping tradition? Is it Chicago (Belfour, Roenick, Chelios, Amonte...) or Pittsburgh (Jagr, Lang, Kasparaitis, Boughner, Kovalev...and probably Straka is next)? Fuking Craig Patrick... in addition to Kovalev (whose freed up salary would've been more than enough to pay the rookies who will head up next year's lineup), they've dumped Robataille and Primeau for basically nothing. It's pathetic. Why dismantle the team? Just fuking sell it already if you're not going to get an arena.
all such trades are merely distractions from the inevitable for most of the also-ran teams.
the Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup Winning train keeps rolling towards a well earned victory this year (and possibly the President's Trophy).
Signs were clear from the beginning of the year... the Queen dropped the opening puck (last time she did, 50 years ago, Howie Meeker's team won too)...
we now return you to your regularly scheduled delusions of playoff capability
most of these teams should be trading for good golfers for all the chance of them playing in June

Yep. And the Avs just signed Bates Battaglia. Between him and Marchment they just added all the fortification they need to win those few, gritty, one goal games they couldn't quite muster last season. This pretty much wraps it up in my mind.
One of three teams is going to win the west: Dallas, Colorado or Vancouver (believe it or not I agree with the earlier razz-job). I've been watching the Canucks at least a couple times a week all season long. They are rock solid and a much more steady and confident team than they were last year. If they can stay healthy they'll be a match for anyone. I sure as hell wouldn't line up to play them if I were a coach.
All I can say about Detroit is: ahhh hahahaha! Too bad Miller just signed a 4 year deal with LA. Nice try though! Cujo will prove that Hasek, not goals, was the difference in last year's Cup run.
Out east, it's pretty much the same: Ottawa, Philly or Toronto. If the Flyers and Leafs go at it before one or the other gets to Ottawa, the Senators have a shot. Otherwise I think they're to short on grit. They'll find a way to lose in 7. They kind of remind me of the Braves, actually. The Rangers don't have a prayer unless somehow everyone can check their ego at the door.
Do you realize in the span of a month, my favorite team has literally be dismantled before my eyes? And not for talent, for salary and that's it.
Gone are:
Alex Kovalev (perhaps the best puck handler and wrister in the NHL)
Jan Hrdina (Pens' best face-off man, solid two way player)
Ian Moran (gritty 2-way D, kept things relaxed in the locker room)
Wayne Primeau (gritty F who can dig pucks out of the corners, deflect shots in front of crease)
Randy Robataille (same deal)
Andrew Ferrence (one of their best young D men)
Janne Laukannen (good riddance!)
Marc Bergevin (veteran D man who can teach younger kids to play smart)
The only guy left is Straka. You think he wants to stay anymore the way he claimed last week? Hell no. He wants out. It's one thing to be next in line for the C, but who wants to play with a bunch of AHL calibre players (NHL talent, but AHL experience IOW)? He's probably gone too.
And then there's these guys from the two previous seasons:
Jagr
Lang
Kasparaitis
Boughner
Now let's look at what we have in return
Abid
Focht
Lefebvre
Samuelsson
Fata
Lintner
and some guy that is out for the season and has no stats.
And three decent prospects (all from the Jagr deal).
WOOOO HOOOOOO!
I officially dislike Craig Patrick. If you're going to dismantle the team then just say so, don't fuking go on and on to TSN and others that "we think we can win with these new guys". WTF do you think you're kidding besides yourself, Craig??

Really pathetic to see a franchise die this way.

They also got Doug Gilmour, which could be good or bad.
And I say again "Arrghhhhh!"
