just watching a matrix rebroadcast while i get some work done, and got to thinking about awesome fight scenes. ones that just left me breathless. several jackie chan's come to mind (perhaps rumble in the bronx and jackie vs. the gang in their hideout -- the fight with the shopping cart), the matrix with neo vs. agent smith in the subway station. also, crouching tiger, hidden dragon, when the two women (forgive me for forgettign their names) go at it. can't remember if the first or second fight scene was more incredible.

any other votes?

Raiders of The Lost Ark. When Harrison Ford ends up fighting all the baddies through the streets, then shoots the bad-ass blade swinger with a weary 'aww...**** it' gun shot. I remember as a kid the theatre exploding with laughter and holy-shits. Good Times.

yoda in episode II. I'm not a star wars fan, but that was by the far the coolest fight scene in movie history

[edit: since my knowledge of history is obviously limted, I have edited this to contrain my opinion to the movies which I have seen.]

oh yeah, the first battle scene in patriot is pretty intense too when the little boys are out there, and when Mel Gibson's character throws that axe in the guys skull.

Fight Club: when the owner of the bar comes down and kicks tyler's ass for a while, then tyler bleeds in his mouth... That was just disturbing. Perfect for the movie....

The best fight scene was in for the Incorruptibles (not the good title in english i guess) the moovie about Eliot Ness, with Kotsner, Sean Connery and Andy Garcia. The scene where Garcia dive and shoot with his gun his fantastic. It's one of the best realistic fight scene of the whole history of cinema.

The best war scenes (the most horrible ones) are in Save private Ryan from Spielberg. They are frightening.

Bah.. makes me wanna cry to notice that almost all of above suggestions are Hollywood pics. Hongkong is where I'd look for the best scenes. John Woo has some pretty cool stuff in such films as "Bullet in the head", "Hard boiled" and "Killer".

Also check out Jackie Chan's "Snake in the Eagle's shadow" if you want to see some coreographies. From the more recent works of Chan I'd notice "The Legend of drunken master" (Jui kuen II), it has some awesome stunts.

Oh, and also remember Jet Li's hongkong flicks (and forget those American Hollywood crap).

I'd forget about bullet-time cameras and computerized fighting scenes. I prefer scenes that have the actors really doing something extraordinary physically instead of just making it look like it.

Black Hawk Down's gore was much more gruesome, though the firefights really were less dramatic (though probably more realistic.)

If Band of Brothers were a movie, its battle scenes would also rate above Saving Private Ryan's, IMO.

i second the hong kong john woo fight scenes, i guess it's more gunplay than anything. replacement killers had some nice stuff with mia sorvino.

one note about the harrison ford raiders scene (where he shoots the guy with the swords) that was improvised because harrison was ill and wanted to wrap. if you look at his face you can tell.

i forgot about some of the scenes from jackie's "legend of drunken master." i agree that some of those scenes were amazing (the fight UNDER the train car with the spear was just wicked-weird). though the 2 vs. 100 hatchet-weilding gang members was a bit much for my tastes.

believe it or not, i am also very fond of the final fight scene in universal soldier (lundgren vs. van damme). sure, the rest of the movie was lacking, but damn they set it up well.

finally, the T100 vs. the T1000 from T2: Judgement Day was amazing at the time ('93?)

as far as breathtaking choreography is concerned for star wars fighting, i think darth maul vs. qui gonn jinn AND obi wan was freakin' awesome -- practically the only reason to watch that movie in the first place.

i think one of the best fight scenes is the one where Carl Spackler fights off the flowers in Caddyshack. I guess he wasn't really fighting them, as much as needlessly chopping them up. None-the-less.

The Duelists --a movie which is about one man's onsession with getting retribution in the form of a duel with another during Napoleon's campaigns

excellent fighting scenes, Harvey Keitel before he was a big actor and one of the Sutherlands.

Excellent, realistic fight scenes, one after another . . .and a good ending too.
