A similiar case occured in Singapore. A robber robbed a woman in a housing flat. All cries and yells fell on deaf ears. Sigh. Are city folks becoming less and less caring?

I agree that callous is probably the case (mind you, all people are not equally callous, so this isn't necessarily indication of an entire population), but I'd like to offer the oddball explanation that maybe they thought they were getting spoofed on some candid camera show? Of that, you should agree that people have rightly so become callous to being spoofed in somebody's "practical joke". People will literally do anything these days to get something "funny" on video, no?

I see a few reasons mostly based on Selfishness.

One, some people just don't like their space being invaded with other peoples problems.

Two, some people consider their time to be more precious than others.

Three, some people feel getting involved can be much more than the commitment of time at that moment(e.g. needing to be a witness later).

Four, some people feel it isn't worth putting yourself at risk physically.

Five, some people feel it isn't worth putting yourself at risk legally( There are the Good Samaritan laws but people are still sued ). There's an old proverb: No good deed goes unpunished.

It generally isn't that they don't care, I feel they just don't want to have to.

BTW, I don't mean to excuse those people for their inaction. That action deserves punishment. Just like you can't hide behind ignorance, you can't hide behind neglect either.

There's an angle I haven't seen brought up in all this:

Even if I didn't do it for compassionate reasons, I would have called 911 for mainly selfish ones.

Maybe the guy would have lived, or they could have caught the guy that did it from my description. I would have felt all heroic!

Moogs, I would have to agree with you for the most part. Sadly.

hmm, wonder if this guy would have been so bold if the city had "right to carry" laws in place.

it's terrible that this happened though.
