Everyone knows their android phones already do this right? It brings up a different dock screen for the car, than it does on the home media dock which is really, really nice.
I wouldn't be surprised if the 4 year old idea came from Apple though, it uses a magnet in a different spot on the dock to tell it which dock it is in. nice and simple.
