Well unless they have Cold Fusion powered engines, they will leave a trail. There are IR satellites that record every hot thing on the planet that moves ( courtesy of the US military ). It is much more efficient than using Radar to detect missile launches. Unless it detects something moving rather fast the data is just kept for historical record and can be analysed after the fact.
