Of course there is no conclusion to this thread...no consensus number 1. I would say that most people gave the nod to Zep, even though I find their songs on average too long.

I'll give some props to Phish as well. Very tight band (more talented then people give them credit for), with trippy lyrics. A whole melthing pot of influences too. I find them a lot more listenable than the Dead. I also saw them in concert and had a great time back in the day.
ahem. The Other Ones were not a cover band. thats offensive. The Other Ones was a band of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, who changed their name after Jerry's departure. Changing their name recently to the Dead to re-attach them to their old glory.

Now where IS that sarcastic smiley ?
Yes Mr. Freak I was well aware of the ENTIRE histor of GD, TOO, etc...I'm a pretty hardcore live music junkie and saw Phil & Friends twice last year and Ratdog once.
I was just repeating what is basically a Deadhead inside joke. It's rather funny if you look at it that way.... It went over most people's heads.
Many old-time heads, especially the biggest Jerry fans, are a bit offended by the name change.
You really haven't heard Phish or the Dead, have you?

well, the Grateful Dead is my favorite band. So, I have heard one or a thousand of their songs. But, to be quite honest, I haven't heard too much Phish. Most of the Phish I have heard is covers of other people's songs (like Dead tunes); until more recently, my roommate is a big fan of them and plays them a lot. I haven't heard anything remarkable from them though, nothing to push them ahead of the Gratest band evar.
Also, I think the most popular reggae band ever should get some mention in this thread of threads: Bob Marley and the Wailers. Unfortunately Bob died quick, but I think he was pretty influential. I mean, for crissakes God himself (Eric Clapton) covered one of their songs. So many of his songs were great. All of them were deep felt. I dare someone to listen to "Kaya" and not light up. I double dogg dare ya. I gotta run downtown to buy some shit now, cuz that song is awestruck.
The question was, who is the greatest BAND of all time. Not the best music, not the most influential, not the ones with the most record sales etc.
The greatest band.
What makes a band great? Of course good music comes into it. Of course being influential. Name recognition is another factor. People desiring to see them live (even if after their hey day). Living the rock'n'roll lifestyle - drugs, drink, girls. Longevity (how many years did the clash last?)
Once you put all that into the equation, there is only one band that makes it as the Greatest Band Of All Time (bar none).

Haha, it wont ever stop. I dont think the Stones are just a clear cut numero uno.

Finally someone said The Clash. It's true though. The Clash is the best band of all time.
