Then let him stick with writing and producing music. He and Bono can take a flying leap into a Taliban cave...

We vote for politicians to handle political and global affairs. Why do we have to listen to musicians? Ah, I can see where this'll go. Artistic vision...Forget it....

Well for one, if you only listen to politicians you'll never be able to make even a semi-informed decision.

Second, I didn't really care that it was a musician or an artist, but that of a foreigner. The sentiment of his letter is real even if some people choose to ignore it.

How the rest of the world sees us is important, more important than a lot of people here might understand, especially those that have never left North America.

Hmmm...Miles Davis, Leonard Bernstein, Leonard Cohen, Lennon and McCartney, Leiber and Stoller, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach, James Brown, Aretha...and I haven't even hit 1970.

Regardless, it doesn't matter what type of musician he is; that he is one doesn't make his opinion invalid or more valid than mine or yours or Barbara Streisand's. Like Babs' little boycotting Colorado thing a few years ago, he's marketing his fame to influence opinion.

I'm just waiting for the American response from Steve Vai.

Again, when I posted I didn't really think about the fact that he is/was a musician. I just know the words ring true, even if they were penned by GWB.

Never before has BRussell posted so many words at any one time and echoed my exact sentiment.

    Amazing.

Ditto here. BRussell's post sums up my point of view very well. I think I'll make it my new sig. (Kidding on that last part. )

What a joke! To quote Bush (to Jim Lerher during his campaign):

[quote]"I'm not going to play like I've been a person who's spent hours involved with foreign policy. I am who I am."

I think I'll go with Eno, someone who each year (hell, month) spends more time in nations other that his native one than Bush has ever in his life.

Go play with fellowship and scott in the corner.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I have a problem with celebrities giving their political commentaries. Rather, I have a problem that people think they are somehow more entitled to their opinion, take their opinions as more, what, trustworthy or informed or expert than any other Joe Schmoe's. It wouldn't be fair to say that they don't hav ethe right to express their opinions. They just should be taken as seriously as anyone else off the street in subjects outside their expertise or profession.

Ok, I think I've got it.

Being "open to the world" is sitting around patting yourself on the back spouting platitudes about the condition of man. Being "open to the world" means you gladhand with everyone else while doing what you want. It's not your actions that matter with regard to "being open to the world" it's how you carry yourself.

    I think I'm catching on.

    Explain what he means, then.

I'm assuming that the thinks Europe is "open", and since we're dealing with generalizations naturally he must therefore be asserting that the rampant anti-US sentiment is "open".

How do we become "open"? Do we start bashing Europe? Do we let Europe make our decisions? President Bush has given Europe more say on this issue than his predecessor ever did, is that not "open"?

Maybe you mean "open up" to let all the terrorists in? Just let'em all in, and if they cause havok, we deserved it for some reason. ...or maybe you mean open up our pocketbooks without bounds. If we get robbed blind, we deserved it. Open everything up to vulnerablity and zen justice will at last bring right to all.
