Anders, you are a most emminently reasonable fellow. I'm glad to see we've driven off the more ridiculous pie-in-the-sky mac analysts.

    Why do people always assume that wireless = 802.11 <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I for one assume it to be 802.11 when that is what is mentioned in macanoid post

And on <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/embedded/ce.NET/evaluation/news/fromms/mira.asp"; target="_blank">this</a> page at MS.com you will find this:

. I think thats enough proof for me.

what if palm or apple came up with software for PalmOS that allowed us to wirelessly control our computers. sorta like timbuku for palm os

or apple could make a handheld and include this kinda software that only works with OSX.

Microsoft is investing an absolute fortune in things that may have no return. I guess it's not that difficult when you are pulling in billions in monopoly profits. Xbox isn't necessarily going to make money. .NET is no guaranteed winner. They have this Tablet PC which I don't see any major audience for. I guess their plan to dominate the future is simply to be everywhere it could possibly go. I think the major advantage they have is in owning the formats to Word and Excel. It's not really Windows because Windows programs won't transfer automatically to any new type of platform but office functionality is a basic necessity.

meh it seems a little too techno-futurish...

and lacks any creativity. I would not want it to be creative with, i would want it to surf on.

just leaves a bad taste in my mouth

they're just doing it because they can, not because it represents a new opportunity for the pc. I don't think it will sell outside of business guys with major disposeable income. The iMac's design will sell more units that this junkards

the mira system is not a remote display. this doesn't work all too well over a regular iee802.11 connection (i'm doing it here with vnc all day... by the way there is a vnc client for palm handhelds which lets you connect to a desktop mac/*nix/pc via vnc - just because someone mentioned that)

and it's way too slow to be useable. i would only accept a lossless compressed video image and in bad cases this would mean huge files and big refresh rates (i don't wanna sit at a display with 15 fps).

for reading how lame this mira actually is, please go to:

    <a href="http://news.com.com/2100-1040-801506.html?legacy=cnet"; target="_blank">http://news.com.com/2100-1040-801506.html?legacy=cnet</a>;

so basically what mira is is a handheld windows ce computer (not pocketpc i guess) with a software switchable dual display input (one for the handheld and one for the pc), a 802.11b pcmcia card and a touchscreen layer above the tft. oh, and yes, moki it DOES include a cpu... some arm xscale i guess in the reference design...

you are not able to do your work on a mira tablet. it'll only allows you to surf the web, read some mail and stuff like that.

i'm much much happier sitting here with a powerbook g3, powerbook g4 and a nice linux server connected over airport. this is what i would call a revolution in the way i work. not being able to rip off the head of my tft and take it with me in the kitchen to read some mail (did that with a palmpilot some years ago already...)

just a quick note about batteries: the pocket PCs can be lucky if running more than 6 hours this thing has to have a bigger screen, a wireless card and so on, so don't expect anything more than those 6 hours (even though it has a bigger battery, screens or better background lighting sucks much more power the bigger the screen is...)

I just have to wonder how different these posts would be if Apple had released this, not MS.

Couldn't agree more. Regardless of whether this iPad thing is useful of not, it looks exciting.

I fully understand Apple has other things to focus on right now, but wouldn't it have been nice if they had annouced something like this, and not MS.

Apple revolutionized wireless and firewire, but once again it looks like others become more succesfull with it.

I don't think they'd be all that different.

I remember when Apple was releasing technologies willy-nilly with no regard to whether or how they were actually useful, and without any overarching principle that made them work together. That was when they were falling apart and losing money hand over fist. I'm glad they're more selective and pragmatic now, and I'd rue anything that looked like a return to the bad old days of what-iffery.

The closest Apple has come since Jobs returned is the Cube, whose reception on these boards was not especially warm.

Here is an old thread which goes into much more in-depth speculation on this subject.

    <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000912"; target="_blank">Detachable Screen</a>

My long winded post illustrates my reasons why this type and I stress "type" of technology is important to all computer users!
