@PP I agree! Product Transition == new product in an existing market or new product in a new market!
Actually, I think Apple has announced a product transition in every year for the last 4 years, with one of those years also announcing reduced revenues... and each time the product announced was not an absolutely new product... rather, it was a new model of an existing product.
Beware of giving Apple too much credit. After all, this is the company that released the iPad 1 on Easter weekend (woe to all the Christian Apple employees that might have wanted that day off for religious reasons cause they likely didn't get it)
My guess is that Apple thought like this:
Easter = Spring = Happy People Shopping, Family Time together, maybe they'll go to Apple Store, Sales in the Malls etc... So if some Apple Employees didn't like that, too bad...
But, how can any of us even begin to guess what the actual reasons are???? I just hope that there won't be any scandals to steal away from Apple's Media Efforts! Examples:
During WWDC 2011, as Steve Jobs introduced OS5 and Lion, the US Media was CRAZED about the Weinergate!!! I was so ticked off about that timing, because I would rather have had more people talk about Apple stuff than that Weinergate BS!!! And, even if it wasn't about Apple, how about that Debt Ceiling Crisis, and so many other things that need real attention??? Then the insanity about DSK Arrest, and Anthony Trial in Florida... The US Media went nuts on those things too... Hey, they need Ratings, it's Busine$$!!!
My guess is that there must be lots of folks keeping their fingers crossed at Apple with each Product Release!!! Timing is only one part of it! OS 5, iCloud, Next iPhone - those thing are keeping lots of people at Apple awake at night, working their butts off, and then the Opinions come, where the rest the pundits will be teLling all of us how Apple should have done it, better, differently etc... Same with AAPL predictions!!! Same old Song and a Dance... Life....
Happy Summer 2011 to all, plus Happy Installs, Restarts & Backups!
Except it doesn't seem that's what Apple meant because they implied it would result in reduced revenues, whereas a wholly new product would result in increased revenues.
Yes, in the long run, but not necessarily at first.
Say, Apple decided:
1) to own the low end Tablet market with a $199 iPad
2) introduce a $999 40" TV with built-in ATV and 1-year subs to all the major nets -- and a purchase plan that costs 1/2 f your monthly cable bill

Well the latter would definitely increase revenues since it wouldn't reduce any other product sales - it might reduce margins, but it would increase revenues.
The first would reduce revenues perhaps, if it cannibalized the iPad substantially - but it seems unlikely that Apple would make a tablet that cannibalized the iPad substantially. Certainly we don't have any rumours about one.
They have to be doing a major update on a product, resulting in temporary supply disruption, it's the only thing that fits.
it's still unclear to me why there needs to be two ipad launches in a single year. Other than a subpar camera the specs on the ipad 2 are fine imo and it's the software that needs to mature (ios 5) rather than another hardware rollout.
The announced "transition" will mostly likely be the screen real estate on their mobile line. Most of the attention will be on iOS5 being shown off on larger displays.
My wild guess is that they will move aggressively in the gaming market with a new 5" iPod Touch. This would compete against Nintendo's WiiU at home with iOS5 Airplay > Apple TV. Also on the go vs the upcoming PSP Vita. Their current resolution is quite flexible:

That's not going to happen.
Apple made it quite clear during the last earnings call that they are committed to producing the best products. They will not compromise in order to gain market share when they already have the lion's share of industry profits. There will not be any low end iPhone or iPad this year or any year in the foreseeable future.
Moving the iPhone to September makes a lot of sense. It's taking the place of the first blockbuster product, the iPod, now that it's in serious decline. The new ascending product, the iPad, gets the spring.
I do not for a minute believe there will be another iPad release this year. The release of iOS 5 will keep the iPad 2 at the head of the class until next spring.

The battery life of the current touch is terrible if you have WiFi turned on and run graphically intense apps. A larger touch could get a bigger battery without getting thicker.
The 3.5" screen is really small for aging eyes and there are heck of a lot of baby boomers out there.
A larger touch with a 3G radio would create a whole new category of internet access device: small enough to fit in one hand, but not tied to an expensive voice and data plan. Existing iPad data prices prove that economical plans are possible when the customer pays the full price of the device.
I work at an at&t customer care center, and our info points to that time frame for the release date. However I will take a picture of the release announcement announcement and email it out to the admins hopefully my transfer to techsupport comes so I can get all the info. When a new iphone comes out we get more ot and it gets hectic so the call centers need some type of warning about the release of the iphone.
5-7inch would seem a nice size for the daily commute, iPad is too big for the underground and iPhone too small for reading/gaming. If they made a 7inch HDD based Touch with 300GB of storage I'd praise Cthulhu but there's really no chance of that.

Apple wil never introduce the iPad in that form factor. Even Steve made a remark on that form factor in one of his keynotes when he mentioned a competitor's product.
Sure, but every new iPhone model since the 3G has come with termination of an old model, hence a transition. These aren't just modified versions of previous phones after all, the iP 4 is a completely different beast to the 3GS.
This year will be different.
Both the 3GS and 4 will be replaced by two new models.

Apple won't make a 7" iPad but I could see them making a 5" iPod touch.
How does an unannounced product get pushed back from an unannounced date?
Exactly. For pretty much any and all Apple release, every media outlet/blog throws around the words "delayed", "pushed back", "postponed"... but none of those things actually happen. Apple releases something precisely when they plan to release it. (Okay, maybe except the White iPhone 4 :P )

Touché!
That's borderline irresponsible. If true, I hope Apple is hiring extra security.

They already do. It is called the iPod touch.
And I am very eager of course for the new iPad, like most.
