Apple forecast to lead 2011 smartphone shipments with 86.4M iPhones

    What's your point?

Actually, incoming calls are possible if you keep the VoIP app running the background. The problem is that the iPod touch hardware isn't really set up to be a phone and using it to take inbound calls is a pain.

The best audio quality is with mic-equipped earphones. However, if the iPod touch rings, you'll need to answer the call, then plug in the earphones. Awkward. Or if you choose to use the built-in audio hardware, you have to turn the device around since the microphone is next to the camera and the speaker is next to the dock connector. The screen is facing outward, the volume buttons are on the opposite side, and you have to remember to shut the screen down before talking because there's no proximity sensor. Again, awkward, plus the audio quality is much worse.

Let's face it, if you want a telephone from Apple, you really need to buy an iPhone. You need to accept the reality that the iPod touch was not designed to be a telephone.

And yes, free outgoing calls over WiFi is quite useful, especially calling the United States from abroad. I average about $5-10 a month in telephone calls on my prepaid dumbphone, all incoming. Basically, all outgoing calls are free via WiFi.

I wish you wouldn't say counterproductive things like this -- you know how Apple product strategists listen to you.

A media player with a Retina screen for 200 bucks, with no phone so parents can support it, is a national treasure, and therefore a world treasure.

    What are you talking about?

The iPod touch user demographics are quite different than those of the iPhone (or any other smartphone for that matter). The primary users of the iPod touch are in the 13-24 yr old age bracket. The iPhone's primary users are the very desirable 25-49 year olds. Steve himself has said that the iPod touch was training wheels for the iPhone.

Sales of the iPod touch have increased to the point where it is the number one selling iPod.

Sony is actually releasing an Android-based iPod Touch competitor shortly. That tells me there is still a market for PMPs.
What I do wonder is if the costs have come down enough for cellular chips that Apple could release an iPod Touch with a cellular data option much like the iPad so that users can use more than WiFi to connect their iPod Touches to the world.

You're going on record saying that iOS has only 18% marketshare for the entire platform?
