I think for some people, the graphics performance upgrades will help drive sales of the latest model. The iPhone 5 should reach iPad 2 performance this year, which has around 30M triangle/s fill rate. The PowerVR SGX series 6 Rogue is described as capable of 350M triangles/s fill rate. This puts it in league with the XBox 360 with a 500M triangle/s fill rate.

This should make the iPhone 6 like having an XBox 360 in your pocket, capable of pushing HD gameplay out to a TV wirelessly.

If people are only using their iPhone for calling and texting, they may as well use the first or second generation until it breaks. But Apple has a good strategy to prevent this by discontinuing support for anything past the last 1 or 2 generations so this will also be why sales will remain strong: contracts will end and the new OS or new features aren't supported so a new purchase has to be made.

And of course there's plain old gadget lust.
