A lot of companies have the resources to do different things but don't do anything. Hate to ruin your fantasy but public companies are not established to benefit mankind.
maybe so but in your world its ok for companies to you move their goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; they hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; they were safe in their factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. they do not have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything in their factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did. but still they give nothing back to the community.

Yes, for those who skim (and then bother to comment, wft?), these iPads are going to the "teachers", but it's questionable if you can really call them that. They are actually trainees, who have had only 5 weeks of coaching, who are about to get thrust into a full-fledged classroom, with real students.

TfA, Teach for America, or as it's otherwise known: Teach for Awhile, began as an organization with great ideals; helping the poorest of the poor in our country. But it's grown and morphed into an ugly organization that only kinda-sorta still does what it started out to do. Now it's more of a politically-motivated organization that's a huge money-maker for its founders and executives, and a stepping stone to other careers for its "corp members".
There are some regions where they still provide a valuable service in some of the poorest, desperate districts, where the alternative is emergency substitutes. However, that's not what TfA is doing these days. Now they are pushing, bribing, misleading, lying and forcing their way into many major cities around the country, into places where there are already LOTS of qualified teachers looking for jobs. And they're not doing this as a free service, no no no, they are taking substantial amounts of payments to place these kids in schools. Inexperienced kids teaching kids.
Not only does TfA charge for placement, but it costs more money in extra training, support from other staff, and to top off the insult, most of these TfA "teachers" leave after 2 years. That's all they're "obligated" for. So just as they're hitting their stride as teachers, they leave to pursue other, more lucrative opportunities. Leaving the kids with a rookie teacher the following year.
This isn't just me spouting some rumors, this has been researched to death in the past few years, but the TfA organization has gotten in bed with many very rich and powerful people, and has been involved in huge influence-peddling around the country. Here in Seattle their supporters bought a majority of school board seats last election (over half a million dollars in campaign contributions!), and we're paying the price.
The TfA kids (at least many of them) may be well-meaning, but the organization is not, and is certainly not one that deserves Apple's support. It's very sad that Steve Jobs' wife sits on the TfA Board, they don't deserve her anymore.
