I wonder how many (of which I am included) were duped into preordering from AT&T in store? My phone, which AT&T promised would arrive on 10/14 = 10/15, has not even shipped yet. Yet, I was able to walk into 2 AT&T stores on 10/14 and find that they both had over 300 extra iPhones after the small lines. Heck both stores still had a few iPhone 4S models as of 5PM yesterday. The lines were small because the stores pushed in-store preorders. Of course the store wouldn't allow for cancellation of the preorders so I could pick the phone up on 10/14. Instead I have to wait another 2 weeks for my "preordered" phone. Nice.
Lesson learned. NEVER preorder via AT&T. Anyone else have this problem?
Preordered from AT&T last year and it arrived on launch day.
This year? As of 7am on 10/14 it hadn't shipped. I waited in line at the AT&T store and they cancelled my preorder (hadn't shipped yet; if it had, I wouldn't be able to cancel it) and wrote me up for a black 64GB.
So maybe it's your AT&T store or you're not good at schmoozing.
You're totally exaggerating the reaction to the phone - there was no doom and gloom. There were many muted reviews but there were a few really enthusiastic ones too (David Pogue, DaringFireBall, etc., etc.)
But I understand that it's a common practice to pretend to be allied with Apple the underdog. Some underdog.
Find a review in a major tech publication that did not refer to the announcement as disappointing... They all said that unil the pre-orders started rolling in. The reviews since then (with actual use) have been fairly positive. The initial reaction to the announcement was very much doom and gloom.

1) To be fair, I didn't think an accessory for a primary electronic should be allowed to get "World's Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device" since it can't be used as a stand alone product outside the Xbox 360.
2) An iPhone 4S is not a necessity, it's a luxury device among a category that is still a luxury device in most ?if not all ? markets.
This whole argument is apples and oranges from the beginning.
The iPhone is a "luxury necessity."
- the general category of phones = "necessity."
- the general category of game machines = "luxury"
- both are luxury items *within* their respective categories.
Kinnect is a luxurious add-on to a luxury game system. iPhone is a luxurious version of a current necessity.
YBut I understand that it's a common practice to pretend to be allied with Apple the underdog. Some underdog.
you are living in the past. In the old days, there was moral superiority with Apple. M$ was evil, and one could fight the good fight merely by spending money on Apple products.
Not any more. Apple is no longer making wet dreams for geeks.
Apple is now the company wo makes gadgets for Grandma. No geeks need apply. You wanna geek out, get Android. You wanna be an underdog? Get a Blackberry.
Apple is the MOST mainstream brand in the world. Anybidy and everybody knows Apple nmakes the best phone for them. Apple is not any underdog anymore.
Apple is the biggest, badddest most gigantic international corporate behemoth in the entire world. Bigger and badder than Exxon Mobil.
Underdog? Get real. They is the Alpha Dog, and most of its newest and richest its customers don't care.
So the stock sliding to a monthly low of $360 immediately after the announcement isn't doom and gloom?
And the "doom and gloom" has nothing to do with treating Apple as an underdog, but everything to do with analysts not understanding what makes Apple Apple. Still. After over a decade of "research".
The stock sliding to a monthly low of $360 immediately after the announcement?
Are you deliberately distorting the truth or did you not actually pay attention to the stock price?
AAPL was dropping, along with the rest of NASDAQ since the last 10 days in September. The drop on Oct 4 was 0.5% - very minuscule. And then the stock rose on Oct 5, the day when the so-called doom and gloom reviews were actually published. There is no way in hell or on earth you can meaningfully attribute any AAPL stock movement to the Oct 4 announcement. It has been moving down and up with NASDAQ.

Yup, and I preordered it on the online Apple Store itself within seconds of availability. I should be among the first to have one, but, look at that, I live in Canada, not a hundred miles north of the US and I have to wait 2-3 weeks to get it...
I ordered mine through telus the second day of the pre-order. Delivery would have been Friday if I'd been home. Picked it up Saturday instead.
It is my first iphone. My corporate Blackberry was taken away when I switched jobs. I do miss the corp emails that BB was so good with but other than that it does a lot more that the BB ever did.
Siri won't do map look ups in Canada so that is a disappointment. She does take dictation, sends text and voice dials very nicely. Could use a different voice though.
We did have her confused with two conversations though, or at least it appeared she was confused. My daughter asked her about disposing of a body and she responded with "Which child, T... or S...."? I think she was responding to a previous question but it was still funny.
This whole argument is apples and oranges from the beginning.

Fortunately, there is actually data behind this...
Go have a look at the drop in the stock price during/after the keynote. Its extremely evident.
However, enter th date range 10/03-10/17 in google finance, and hover over 10/4....it drops to 359 after the announcement (about 3PM)....it remains low till 10/7, and then shoots up, as the news about record preorders comes in.

Actually, a house is a necessity, but not a telephone. As such, a phone is an accessory to a necessity. Now, some houses are luxurious. So the phone, if it is an iPhone, is a "luxury accessory to to luxury example of a basic necessity".
As such, calling the Kinnect anything other than a luxury accessory to a luxury game system to a luxury house that is in itself a necessity is a misnomer.
Microsoft would be wise to keep that in mind as it goes around, shouting in the face of every person on the street that the Kinnect is selling well. Me, I get sick of these Microsoft employees who post here and get paid good money to give bad advice. Kinect is a best-seller? No, it cannot be. Not when it is a luxury add-on to a luxury device in the context of a luxury example of a basic necessity!
You think people living in mud huts have a Kinnect? No way! But they all have iPhones, because now you can get an iPhone 3GS for free! So that just goes to show that the i4S is a brilliant marketing move by Apple.
I wonder how many (of which I am included) were duped into preordering from AT&T in store? My phone, which AT&T promised would arrive on 10/14 = 10/15, has not even shipped yet. My friend, you are not alone. I'm not a victim of the pre-order dupe, but the, "okay, this is awesome, what's the fastest way for me to order...oh, hey, I'm already on the att site..." dupe. When I ordered, the site told me ship time was three to four weeks...three days ago. Today, ordering from Apple has a wait time of one to two weeks. Why I never considered this, I don't know. And now when I check my order status with att, it says, "back ordered." It doesn't even give me a ship date. Oh well.
First: of all it's the long term - making a promise and deliver to it. Again and again and again. Which Apple has done now many years in a row. To an extend that they have the market power to reach these sales figures.
Second: It's an achievement production wise and logistically. When was the Golden Master posted to developers? And then making sure you can get more than 4 million phones out to hundreds of stores representing Apple and operators in all those countries. In time for launch.
Third: it's a quality product with few returns and high satisfaction rates (well - will have to see for i4S but I'm convinced they will top customer satisfaction ratings again).
Fourth: Indeed, they had some issues with servers and with Siri (also servers?) but in general it has worked very well with activations and updates as well. Especially considering the sales volumes and including launch of iCloud, update of Lion, posting iOS 5 in the same short time span.
So - it's and BIG thing. And it looks simple. But how many companies has managed to do it?
Yes, but nearly every single person who bought an i4S already had a functioning phone. As such, the i4S is NOT a necessity. It is a luxury item.
Apple got 4,000,000+ people to buy an expensive luxury during a huge economic downturn. You've got to hand it to them. They done good. They know the best way to take money out of other people's accounts and to put it into Apple's accounts. They are freaking experts at it!
And their stock price will reflect their wisdom.
And don't forget the best part: most of us are happy and satisfied with the 4s that we purchased!
Comments
It's definitely a luxury in ALL markets. But it is commonly affordable luxury, which in part explains its popularity.
Of course. That was never in question.
