“Samsung has come out with products that appeal to all the different form factors and specifications out there,” said T.Z. Wong, a Beijing-based analyst at researcher IDC. “That is a strategy they have executed very well.”
Apple's iPhone has appeal, but people want different form factors and physical keyboards. If you're trying to keep market share, it seems obvious that Apple should add some new product forms with the same underlying hardware and software.
1. It's plain now why Samsung is willing to risk losing apple as a customer. They clearly make more profit from their own phones than selling chips to Apple.
Yeah, I actually got the opposite message. Samsung can fight Apple, risking future legal disaster (which frankly looks more and more likely) and sell lots of phones. but it's going to be a pyrrhic victory in terms of their bottom line, even before Apple has fully pulled it's A-x CPU and flash memory contracts from Samsung. Wonder how shareholders feel about that.
Personally, I think someone at Samsung assumed it was their right to make ripoff copies of popular CE devices, and they never expected Apple to take it to the mat the way that they did. I would guess whoever bet the company on this path is probably going to be on a short leash now. If Samsung starts getting some more favorable court decisions (which they haven't so far) and makes enough money from phone sales to offset the loss of their biggest customer, then they'll continue on their current course. If overall profits continue to sag, or they start to see expensive legal writing on the wall, I don't think they're likely to stick with Android-powered iDevice ripoffs for long.

So the flash/a5 production dissapears, samsung closes the factories and loses the poor preforming segment of its company to focus on the more profitable areas?
I wonder how the shareholders would feel about that
Why not go with what we do know. Overall $$ increased 37% and profits increased doubled, most likely showing a change from dumb phone to smart phone sales. Between those two, true smartphone sales increased quite nicely.

Samsung semiconductor business is still in black with 16% profit margin. Their display unit is losing money.

some people want that and if they do, they can get another phone. I think Apple is doing great with the iphone, >50% industry profits with one phone. Apple has the best selling smart phone on ATT and Verizon and if I'm not mistaken, Apple has the second best selling smart phone on ATT.

Samsung eats what Apple doesn't.

The bullshit Samsung smartphone numbers
Samsung could ship 100 million phones, but that doesn?t tell us how many they actually sold.
The bullshit Samsung smartphone numbers
Well, you know what they say: "Real artists ship."
Doesn't say, "Real artists actually sell their products to individual customers and have a return rate lower than their purchase rate."
