I think iMessage is THE killer app.

I'm shocked and horrified that Apple isn't making ads JUST for iMessage.

    "This… is iMessage."

Shot of an iPad opening the Messages app

    "Type all you want."

Begins typing on the iPad, sends message

    "Snap all you want."

Shot of an iPod touch taking a picture and sending it via iMessage

    "Shoot all you want."

shot of someone taking a video with an iPhone 4S and sending it via iMessage

"And send it to any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch you want."

Shows them as their names are said

    Music cuts out

    "For free."

The word 'Free.' appears on screen in black Myriad Pro Semibold

    Music returns

"iMessage. Only in iOS 5, only from Apple."

I take it that iMessage isn't on the Touch?

It's actually the first item on the left advertised on the iPod touch main page. They even make the same emphases I did above.

    1) It's on all devices running iOS 5. I do wish they'd add it to the Mac, as well, I like having my messages synced between devices.

    2) Pretty much everyone I know is on iOS 5.0. So much so that when I bought my iPhone 4S this past weekend I dumped SMS messages altogether from my AT&T plan.

    3) Siri with the Messages app is pretty great when driving. It also knows a lot of swear words so those with Tourette's Syndrome will likely be accurately represented. Give it a try.

    End of story.

I'd say iMessage would be worth it. Friends with iPods have certainly enjoyed being able to send real texts to their iPhone friends.

It's sad that Apple dropped the ball while Samsung's Galaxy 4.0 (and 5.0) and other Android MP3 Players are new options. The A5's GPU performance would certainly discourage any gamer of considering those options - provided they've seen action clips of 'Infinity Blade', 'Real Racing 2', etc.

A look at iSuppli's assessment of the iPhone 4S suggests that the A5 only costs $15(!), while the A4 supposedly only cost less than $11.

Admittedly, the performance gains of the A5 over the A4 most likely had someone thinking it was worth a lot more than the iOS 5 upgrade seen this time around.

Undoubtedly, Apple's A6 SoC will have quad-core ARM Cortex A9, though dual-core Cortex A15 is supposed to be better in performance and power conservation, but won't be available until Fall 2012. PowerVR SGX 600 series (Rogue) suggests up to a 100X performance increase over the SGX543MP2 in the A5.

I hope that any upcoming iPod Touch has the A6 and re-syncs the performance with the current iPhone options.

Isn't the simple answer that the upgrade is free for iPhone and a chargeable one for iPod Touch?

I believe it's been 3 years since Apple changed the accounting to allow the Touch updates to be free.

you underestimate the usefulness of the iPod touch. i use it to text and make calls. just about the only thing it can't do like the iPhone is GPS.

    ...and take a decent photo.

    best of all, it's $0/month.

When they ship a 128GB A5 iPod Touch, I'll be first to buy it. Meanwhile, I don't see the point of upgrading the OS when my 64 is simply full of music, no games and no battery leaks. I'm listening to an 8GB Nano Touch I got refurbished for $100 all the time now anyway. But would love to have a new higher capacity A5 Touch with djay mixing more tunes at once. I think Apple is probably using all the 64GB modules it can get for the new 64GB iPhone 4S and once supply exceeds the demand they have for that model, they'll move to the 128GB A5 iPod Touch. While that might be as far out as next Fall, I sure hope not. Maybe the next 128GB A5 iPod Touch will have an all new 2012 design with a 4 inch screen.

I'm also hoping they add iOS 5 to the next Nano. There are plenty of app ideas for that little screen I'm sure. The current model is a fantastic music+audio book player. Listening to the Steve Jobs biography on it. It's like a shuffle on steroids.

That's definitely true of android phones, looking at new ones to buy there are still tons still on 2.2. Some of which had 2.3 updates that were announced months ago but still aren't out. Seems like a huge mess.

But at least some of the time you are near wifi, as well as some other new features that don't need a connection. On my iPad I hate the update to the music player app, but even without 3G I love the new notifications and things like gestures for multitask bar and app switching.

Heck, other than the music player issues I'd probably update to 5 just for wireless syncing, great feature.

If you're on iPad and use the music app at all, I'd wait for at least 5.0.1. And those are 100% reproducible problems, not rare freak issues. Easily one of the worst Apple apps I've ever used by far.

totally agree. WiFi syncing is great! i haven't seen my iPod cable in weeks. also, the iPad music app is a big step down from the previous version. i'm glad they didn't cripple the iPod version as much.

The $0/mo thing is very appealing. My wife and I have been looking at his and hers iPhone 4S and a plan with enough free calling, anytime minutes and data to avoid having to worry about overages. By the time our 3-year contract would be up we'd have paid the phone company over $5000!

However, Apple is treating the iPod touch as a kids' toy now. The camera was one step above useless last year.

The big problem remains lack of WiFi, even in a city of over 2 million. Almost all the networks require payment of some form (buy a coffee to get a code, buy minutes, etc.) That's hardly what I'd call $0/mo and it won't tell me if my bus is running late because there's no signal there.

WiFi at my parents and in-laws isn't really important. I'm there to see the people after all. It's frustrating to watch young people disappear from the scene because their phone/iPod is more interesting than interacting with other humans face to face. Siri could be the next step in that devolution.
