Why are you comparing running Windows XP to Mac OSX+iCloud? I have a ton of newer software that my 3 year old Windows XP machine CANNOT run because it requires newer hardware and Windows 7. So my 6 year old iMac won't load OSX Lion, so what?! My iPhone and iPad sync up perfectly. AND my 5 year old (almost 6) Mac Pro runs OSX Lion+iCloud just GREAT!

The earlier versions of ipod Nanos can overheat;replace them with new ones for free.This new program was initiated due to some battery issues of the ipod nano which are known for several years now!
I use mine daily with my iHone 1H9 for bedtime podcasts. dropped it last year and the screen doesn't work. I don't want a newer one for the sole reason that at the end of each podcast, it continues onto the next one. With the 1g after a podcast finishes you have to manually select the next podcast.

Does Toyota give you a free 2012 model if your 2005 model has a bad battery? We won't be getting free brand new iPod nanos.
When I returned my defective LCD-TV to CostCo that I bought for $1299, 22 months before, they told me that it's current value was $749. However, they gave me a card with $1249 to buy a current model TV.
For this, my suspicion is that I'll get a 1st Generation back. Wouldn't mind a later gen Nano though. :-)
Speaking of almost 10 years old, we're coming close to Apple having used the same 30-pin connector on iDevices for nearly a decade. It's been over 8.5 years, which is pretty damn impressive for a company that only uses an evil proprietary dock connector because it's trying to gouge their customers. I wonder how many handset vendors have used the same connector for so long? When I see cables, even just for charging, at stores there are columns and columns of choices, even for the same vendor's devices.
I've had maybe six or seven different models of Blackberry over the past ten years. I've had three different USB connectors for the AC adapter over that period.

I can one-up you there. My 2007 MacBook Pro lost video when it was about two years old. I took it to the Apple Store (still under AppleCare), and they ordered a replacement video card. Apparently, from what I had read on message boards, that was a common problem with that particular MBP. About 8 days goes by, and I hear nothing from them, which is very atypical. Just as I'm about to escalate, I get a call from the Apple Store. The new card did not fix the problem, so they informed me that I would be getting a new (unibody) MBP. Now THAT is customer service.
They're not giving brand new iPod nanos. They're giving 1st gen iPod nanos.
I wouldn't bet on that. The new 8GB Nano costs $129 to buy new. Given a gross margin of 50% (per Apple), their cost is 65 bucks per unit. They have no stock of Gen 1 nano units remaining, which means the replacements would have to be freshly refurbished. It is entirely possible that just sending out new units would cost less than refurbishing the existing ones. I'm guessing the reason they're declaring a 5-8 week turnaround is that they'll want to see how many Nanos get returned as part of the program. If it's a relative few (no idea what that kind of scale is, maybe 100k), then they may be able to provide refurbs with parts on hand, and then the only costs Apple is absorbing is labor cost. On the other hand, if the returns are on a scale where they have to acquire parts, then it could very well be cheaper to just take the $65 hit and ship out a new Nano.
Just got my box yesterday. 9.5x3x6in dimensions with a letter inside and precut dark gray foam (2 pieces). The letter explains that you must return ONLY the device and that it is at $0 cost to you.
In the box you'll find a sealable plastic baggie and a removable piece of packing tape to reseal the box. There is a rip tab on the fedex sticker on the box, remove the tab and rip off the top label to find the return shipping label from your address to:

Well, not EVERYTHING. We now know for certain that the part of the agreement that says you may be liable for $100 worth of crap if you do something wrong or your device is not part of the program does not apply in any case here.
If you;ve sent your request and received your e-mail you might still be waiting for your box. I just talked to Apple and they said that as the boxes become available they are sending them out. The 10 business day limit will start once you receive the box.
Hello all. Just thought I'd join up here and let you all know I finally got emails saying that my two 1st gen ipod nanos are being shipped and I should have them tomorrow. Both emails give me serial numbers and when I go to the apple site and enter the serial numbers they both show up as white 1st gen ipod nanos. I had sent in a white one and a black one, but we'll see when they show up. They've sat in drawers for the past 2 or more years, so hey, its cool that I didn't throw them away. I'll update my post after they arrive, let you know how they look and work etc. Good luck to everyone else.
Sent in a first gen nano about a week and a half ago (after waiting about 4 weeks for my return box). Just received a brand new nano touch. What a great deal for me. I almost threw out my original nano because the battery was so warn it could barely hold a charge. Now I'm glad I didn't as I have a new nano touch to play with. This thing is amazingly small and the screen is very nice. Makes the headphone jack look abnormally large!
I had read they were running out of original nanos and were substituting new nano touches. Glad I wasn't one of the first to get my original one in...I'm much happier with the touch.
