I've had 3 iPad 2s. The first tow I dropped on the cement. One just had a couple dented corners, the other had broken glass in one corner. Told Apple the truth they replaced both without issue.
It's possible that $50 off wasn't enough to get around the potential stigma of buying a refurbished unit.
I think that's it, although not the stigma part. Refurbs can be great but, really, $50 off on a $500 item for a refurb version isn't enough to generate any interest. This is much more realistic in terms of moving refurbs.
Now that I think about it, they probably did have a backlog of refurbs not due to big numbers of failures but because the refurb price wasn't attractive. Now with the new model rumored for Feb. gotta move 'em now.

...the 32GB Wi-Fi model, which is priced at $499 refurbished. Similarly, the high-end 32GB Wi-Fi model is available for $599
Come on Katie, read what you type
Nothing that Samsung can release will ever be better because it will just be a single unit, not a device that connects to an ecosystem.
It's precisely because of the ecosystem that I don't want an iOS device. Apple (or any other corporation) acting as a moral arbiter for me? No thanks.
