If you replace "ultrabook" with "laptop" or "desktop" that's exactly what happened before. (and is still happening today)
All "WinTel" manufacturers are competing with each other. The Windows PC has been a commodity for a very long time.
It doesn't matter if you buy a Dell, HP or Acer... you're still getting a Windows computer.
There's nothing wrong with that... it's been like that since the days of the IBM PC clones. Hell... I remember reading Computer Shopper magazine in the early 90's, and it was 700 pages thick because there were 500 different companies selling computers.
Thankfully that's been whittled down to a dozen or so companies today... but they are all in the business of selling computers that run Microsoft operating systems.
And then there's Apple... who does their own thing.
Ya' know...
Just think of what a wonderful tech world we would be living in today if there were no Apple to upset everything -- and cause us to have to waste time evaluating alternatives, making decisions, adapting...
Apple should just go with the flow...
But, no, they just keep wasting our time...
They had plenty of chances -- In 1977, 1983, 2001, 2006, 2009...
If Apple had just "let well enough alone" we'd all be better off and would have saved a lot of time and unnecessary upheaval...
I didn't think of it yesterday but how is Sony doing in PC profits? They seem to sell to the more premium consumer market. That seems like Samsung's biggest competitor for the space.

If I recall correctly, Sony is down there at like 4th place among Windows PC vendors, but that was a few years ago. Their VAIO line is poorly marketed: the average person can't tell you what makes VAIO distinct from a Dell or HP. I used to like Sony's thin and light laptops like the stupidly expensive VAIO X and the unique, but severely hobbled-by-Windows Vista sub notebook VAIO P (I think it had the underpowered Intel Core Solo). Then Apple perfected the Second-Gen MacBook Air and the VAIOs were history to me. Dead, buried, and hardly mourned.
Samsung doesn't have a notebook. Lets get things straight, Microsoft controls 5000 patents on the pc. Sammy would do nothing more than pimp out a tech that is licensed mostly to MS. Period.
All they do is stamp their name a box. Let Sammy come out with their own OS surrounded by their own box then we can talk. But until then they are nothing but street walkers for MS!
Sold 32 million smartphones or given away. Many of there smartphone sales are buy 1 get one free. So they are stretching the truth on how many they actually sold since half of them are given away. So there actual total sales are 16 million smartphones sold and 16 million given away.
Therefore making Apple the number one smartphone in actual sales of up to 30 million iPhones sold.
The problem is that they can copy the look, the material used, and even the same chips and components, but in the end, it still runs Windows. It's still one of a thousand others that also run Windows. There's nothing special about it. It might be a better laptop than the others, but they'll never compete a long as it runs Windows. Windows PC buyers generally shop for the lowest price, and that means high-end products like these are sunk.
This is spot on. I'm sure samesung can make a good looking machine that some will prefer over the MBP range. Whatever.
You still have the dog awful POS OS on it or ChromeOS which I haven't found to be that great. And you have all that crap like the stickers, buttons that feel flimsy and a machine that just isn't as solid as a MPB.
I don't think anyone should be worried. In my job (and in the minds of a lot of consumers), integration, functionality and ease of use are the killer USPs. Apple oozes integration accross it's entire range like no other company. They have superior functionality with a proprietary OS that's years ahead of the competition and frankly everything they make has an ease of use a baby can master.
I'm serious about the baby comment. My nephew is 20 months and he is navigating and using an iPad like its a part of him. Incredible that apple can span generations.
I simply struggle to see samesung or any other copy cat firm matching Apple. But you always have folks who want different so who knows....

The problem with copying is that they are always one step behind.
Easy solution... Just copy forward
CopyBook Pro... CopyBook Air... CopyPhone 5... CopyPad 3...

You mean GalaxyBook Pro, GalaxyBook Air, Galaxy 6, Galaxy Tab 3, etc.
They have an established name; why not capitalize on it?
LOL!

You know 1 + 1 = 2
But you dont know what 2 + 2 is.
This is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard...
That is what others said when Samsung mentioned that they will beat Nokia to the #1 spot in mobile phones before 2015.
Look at them now. This year, they are on target to beat out Nokia as the #1 mobile manufacturer.
We have figured out how to copy the Macbook Air in a way we can get away with.
wouldn't be too surprising if MacBooks are already at least 25% Samsung.

Isn't iPhone 3GS essentially free now?

Yep, $2,000 over two years is certainly "free".
