You only need a thick bezel because of the weight. It gives you leverage.
If the iPad were lightweight, the bezel could be narrow.
The iPad is a two-handed device when not on a desk/lap/etc. You need the bezel so gripping the iPad, which means holding the screen, doesn't interfere with any other touch points throughout the UX. If there were no bezel you would only be able to hold the sides and back of the device. So holding the device with one hand while trying to, say, browse a website with the other wouldn't be a fluid experience because a stretched webpage would likely have a touch point under where your thumb would be..like in all these screenshots

Maybe it hasn't sunk into the minds of the Appleinsider staff yet but the iPad is a tablet. As such there is little room for external design.
