Apple disagrees. Samsung agrees with you, however.

If the iPad were lightweight, the bezel could be narrow.

The iPad is a two-handed device when not on a desk/lap/etc. You need the bezel so gripping the iPad, which means holding the screen, doesn't interfere with any other touch points throughout the UX. If there were no bezel you would only be able to hold the sides and back of the device. So holding the device with one hand while trying to, say, browse a website with the other wouldn't be a fluid experience because a stretched webpage would likely have a touch point under where your thumb would be..like in all these screenshots

It's not a product of weight it's a product of size. There is only a minuscule bezel on the iPhone and other phones because it can be gripped from the sides with and held in one hand. No matter how light the iPad was, with the same size dimensions, you wouldn't be able to hold it in one hand without gripping it. Just pick up a sheet of paper and notice where your thumb is.

Well, he's actually right. You only need to have that much of your thumb or the heel of you palm on the device because you need the leverage to keep it facing you. If the device were 1/4 the weight it currently is you could hold it easily with just the edge of your thumb and you fingers sprawled on the back. The bezel has to be larger because we need more leverage to grip the device harder because of its weight.

Grab a sheet of paper and hold it upright with one hand. Then see where your thumb is. As light as the sheet of paper is your thumb is still in the same place as it is on an iPad.
