It could well be somewhat bigger. There is nothing sacred about the current size, and MUCH larger phones are increasingly hitting the market.
There is nothing magical or set in stone about the current size.
I can think of 1 reason for the current size. It allows for the majority of people to conduct single handed operation with the phone. Although I can see how this with overly large hands and fingers might like bigger.

A somewhat wider/longer, but thinner phone would allow the same single-handed operation.
There is no magic here. A 3.5 inch screen was great back in the day. Now bigger screens are possible at OK prices. The overall dimensions of the iPhone were built around the old-tech screen size, and calculations of profit maximization. The device is pleasing to the eye with that size, and the cost/benefit calculation was favorable.
The new products will follow the same design process. Apple will produce whatever size phone that yields the highest profits.
Apple products are not some magical "perfect" size. They are a compromise of many, many different factors, all chosen to synergistically maximize profits.
A range of different sizes would be fine. The current size was picked due to many factors. It is not the perfect size, or the only possible size. It is a good size, and back in the day, it yielded the highest profits.
But the tech world changes, as do people's preferences, as do component prices, as do customer expectations.
There would then be an endless list of names to choose from each year. A fat iPhone could be named after one of the baking Apples while a slim model could be named after a sweet eating Apple!
Remember. 6ht Generation iPhone but Apple will cal it the iPhone 5. Some people think the next iPhone will be called iPhone 6. Not!
In The Troll's Guide to AppleInsider Forums, chapter 2 ("iPhone Trolling"), paragraph 18 it says: "Repeatedly assert that the iPhone 4S was not the real 5th generation iPhone." This means the iPhone 5 is the real 5th generation iPhone!
People are getting fatter, and that makes there pudgy fat fingers shorten... not longer.
Just the Android fans who can't seem to stop posting about how Apple needs bigger screens or else they'll continue to not buy that iPhone that they weren't going to buy in the first place because it's not Android enough.
Apple should demand TI find the leak and fire those responsible. If not, they should threaten to pull all of the business
Apple needs to send a clear message regarding confidentially
Chill out - what exactly was leaked? That TI makes some power management chip for the upcoming phone from Apple? BFD. That's like getting outraged if McDonalds leaks that they sold a hamburger to the iPhone development team...
We all know that a new iPhone is coming this year and a power management chip isn't exactly a sexy part of this phone, is it ?!

According to this terminology, the NEXT iPhone (6th generation due this year) would be the 4th iPhone. Did you seem to forget about the iPhone 3GS, which, according to your terminology, was nothing more than the same as the iPhone 3G? Hmmm... I wonder why Apple named the iPhone 4 the iPhone "4"... it was obviously the 3rd generation, according to your comment.

The i5 could easily be a different size.
I agree that the next phone will have a larger screen, but I disagree that 3.5 inch is not the perfect size- in many ways, it is. It's better for single handed operation (for most), and is easily pocketable. It's ridiculous to see these 5" Android devices being used as phones. That's why they have iPads. If some people like, it, that's great, but I want a 4" screen size max with as small a total device size as possible. Portability and ease of use are key issues with many, and this is what SJ was thinking of when he retained the 3.5 inch size.
IMO, 4.3 is about right. 3.5 is tiny by today's standards.
4.3" at 3:2 would make the phone far too cumbersome. Only going widescreen would solve that, but that would fragment the platform, so probably not gonna happen. At 3:2, 4" max.

I've never seen someone repeat the same damn thing so many times in one post. Did you think people were going to miss your point the 1st 3 times, or do you just have alzheimers?

Just can't see the youngsters buying the "Granny Smith" model
They are my favourite! You wouldn't see me buying or eating other than Granny Smith...
Opps... on second thought, Apple have actually released it already. iPhone 3GS (Granny Smith).. see
