Can anyone explain how a country that supposedly is full of impoverished farmers is on course to become Apple's biggest and most important market?

Population 1,336,718,015 as of mid 2011 - 490,000,000 impoverished peasants = 846,718,015 left of which there are probably several times more people than there are in the US who can afford iPhones.

The scale of their economy is enormous.

The number of people involved in farming in China is around 300 million and I wouldn't call them all impoverished seeing as to how China is the largest agricultural producer in the world.

That is exactly the right question to ask.  Their intent is that you might ask that very question, as you have already been given a stark answer.

You know that conditions are bad for a fact? The recent inspection done of Foxconn's Apple line said that while it was not perfect (no line is or ever will be, no matter what country it is in) it was better than most. Foxconn's wages have been reported to be better than most other factories in China. Granted the wages in China don't compare to US wages but the cost of living in China is not as high as the US either. The recent AI article on what it cost to live in a Foxconn 'city' versus what they earned didn't seem so bad. I remember that according to the AI article a week's wages easily paid for a month's rent. My rent is more than a weeks wages but I am not complaining nor close to contemplating suicide.

I think I'd quit a job before I threatened to commit suicide unless I received a raise. Considering how many people there are in China that seem to want the Foxconn jobs that threat seems destined for failure and rather extreme. I am not saying that conditions in China are good or bad because I haven't seen or experienced them first hand and can't make that call. The media sensationalizes everything so it is hard to know what the conditions in China are really like. Do I think any country has the right to demand that another country meet its' own standards? No! We can encourage them to meet certain standards but demand it, not so much.

As far as not wanting your kids growing up in this country of moral/mental abortions. I'd strongly recommend moving instead of threatening suicide.

Bring those jobs back to the US. We can jump of roofs just as good as those chinaman's can.

Last post was moved to a new thread in Political Outsider. This is about Apple, not Socialism, commies, pinkos, liberals, or whomever.

Your post was probably before the update came in, which states this is a factory where there are no Apple products manufactured. Which should change the view for some posters a bit...

PS Why is your Administrator badge an image and not plain text? I couldn't do a Cmd-F and had to scroll down because I didn't remember your name, which I do now.

Why is it that the stock reply to someone complaining about what they see as moral decline often involves the recommendation that they move country?

Should one emigrate because they feel that taxes are too high? or that their government is corrupt? or that they feel that there are too many muggers?

There are 30 other Chinese peasants waiting to take the "jumpers" jobs for "better" wages. It's better than gutting pigs for their crude heparin extraction.

It is realy their problem. They have a choice to quit the Job and apply to manufactures of HP or Dell if they want better conditions of work.
