I can't wait for this retina baby to come out, it's been a while since I was that excited about an apple product, I can even handle mountain lion for it, but of course I ll throw at least 16gbs of ram at it and hope safari doesn't leak to more than 6gbs, lol. I ll even buy it with no ethernet, although a big eff you apple is warranted for this.
It's not in Apple's interest to make it more attractive for 3rd party device manufactures to get behind USB3 because that would reduce the demand for Thunderbolt devices. My guess is that Apple will not disable USB3 in hardware, but will not make USB3 drivers available in 10.8 unless there is an overwhelming customer outcry for it. I expect Apple's response to be something like: "Thunderbolt is better than USB3, therefore we are supporting Thunderbolt. If you don't need the awesome speed of Thunderbolt or you have legacy USB3 hardware, you can use USB3 devices at USB2 speeds."
Release it without a driver stack just to push thunderbolt.. really? The two really don't compete. Thunderbolt is just piggybacking some of the PCI functionality onto the back of the displayport connection. It's not an either or at all, and it never made a viable replacement. Even intel doesn't expect it to drop low enough in cost to replace usb on things like mice, keyboards, and thumb drives. Previously they've stated that it's about how much bandwidth people are willing to pay for.
Only on the 17", unless they think they can get away with dropping FireWire 800.
Perhaps i'm missing a core part of this conversation but I don't see what thinness has to do with the number of USB ports. So long as it's thick enough to support one USB-A port they can support 3. Remember that when the ODD is removed that not only gives Apple engineers back a great deal of internal space but also gives back over 5" of port-side space they can use for ports.
Three USB ports is pushing it if they intend to slim down the form factor. It's certainly possible though.
Three on a 15" or 17" MBP should be a snap! He'll they could add another TB port too. Granted I'm really hoping FireWire dies with this round of updates and I expect the optical to go the way of the dodo. Even if nether of those happened it still should be easy to add a third USB port.
