yes that's true. but it comes in handy when you're doing anything more complicated, like using the Guide or searching. i use the TiVo app for that.
the basic controls could be displayed on the lock screen too, but still it is not as easy.
using Apple TV now is a good example. for simple things, i use its IR remote. but of course when you need to enter text, that sucks and you want to use the Remote app.
