Apple launches App Store in 32 new countries

Apple flipped the switch on the App Store in 32 new countries on Thursday, making good on a promise made by CEO Tim Cook during WWDC 2012 that was slightly overshadowed by the unveiling of the MacBook Pro with Retina display and a host of other product launches.

The App Store further extends it reach and is now available in a total of 155 countries with new users expected to add to the over 400 million active accounts with credit cards now on iTunes.

Full list of countries that gained App Store access on Thursday:
Albania, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Fiji, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Federated States of Micronesia, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Palau, Papua New Guinea, S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Zimbabwe.
Cook announced during the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier in June that iOS App Store had reached the 30 billion download mark with over $5 billion paid to developers of the iDevice apps. With over 650,000 apps available, 225,000 of which are designed for iPad, customers in the 32 new countries will have a plethora of offerings to choose from.

    So what countries are left?


    PS: Perhaps it's my US education but I doubt I could place a quarter of these in the right place on a map and have only been to two of them.

    Weird. Do people even have (or want) iOS devices in those countries? Clearly not too many people do, or else Apple wouldn't have waited 4 years to bring the App Store to those places. Weird that they would even do it now.

    About 40 countries left to be added, and than it will be total world domination!

    That's the iTunes Music Store. Not the App Store. This story is about the App Store.


     


    The App Store exists in dozens more countries than the iTunes Music Store does, Indonesia being one of them.


     


    But it's true that BB rules in Indonesia. It will be the last holdout, apparently. Funny.

    Interested to see what this does to my app's bottom line, but I'm not holding my breath. There's definitely no indication of developers will be making serious money in these countries.

    There's the six or so export ban countries. Iran, Cuba, North Korea etc. 


     


    And probably some so small they don't have the infrastructure to use the iPad yet so why bother (but that is probably a work in progress)


     


    Now that they have gotten this covered they need to get the media side going stronger. Get back seasons up to the HD quality (and just in the system), get titles in right off instead of waiting until 2 months after the box set is out (I'm looking at you HBO) and get them released globally. These three things along with lack of features to 'copy' the box sets, pricing and 'i'm not a ratings viewer so what does it matter what I do' are the reasons for why folks unashamedly torrent tv shows, books and even movies. Places like iTunes could be powerful tools to cut back on such actions, particularly the nets counting downloaded income in budget make good (as well as the views off their own sites etc)
