Got to use one with 10.8.1 today, still very choppy. I can count individual frames for the green button resize or callender flip animation. Even the Air with the HD4000 alone is smoother.

I own an entry level mbp 13 retina. and its really choppy and laggy, even after i switch to 2560x1600 with switch res x.

1. Disable Spring-Loading Delay from System Preferences/Accessibility/Mouse&Trackpad - this actually fixed the issue where scrolling had a delay and seemed choppy
2. Enable "Reduce transparency" from System Preferences/Accessibility/Display - serious gain in performance

I wrote this about the Retina MBP 15" I got a few months back. I returned it and got a 27" LED Cinema Display instead.
From playing with stuff at the Apple shop recently it seems to have improved a lot.
