I too, am very curious where all these android smartphones actually are. The amount of iphones I see on a daily basis (at different times, different places, different people) out numbers all other phones at least 2:1. Maybe because I own one I just notice them more??? Maybe I live in an Apple utopia that doesn't reflect the rest of the world??? Maybe Samsungs fooling me with its iPhone knockoffs??? Maybe everyone with an Andriod is too embarrassed to take it out of their pocket??? Maybe Google considers activations all the free crap phones they give to people that they end up throwing away????
Just can't be sure. But I think its safe to say Apple is in a great position from a market-share, mind-share and definitely profit-share perspective!
I don't get AI's math...
0.8% of 50.9% of the market is more than half of 1.7% of iOS's 31.9% of the market...!
50.9% of 110 million = 55,990,000 (0.8% increase from last quarter = 445k gain)
31.9% of 110 million = 35,090,000 (1.7% increase from last quarter = 587k gain)
Sorry AI, while I like the headline, you can't simply say iOS gained 2 for every 1 Android newbie.
Your math is wrong. Those are absolute numbers, not relative numbers. Android gained .8% of a percent in absolute terms, going from 50.1% marketshare to 50.9%. Apple gained 1.7% marketshare, going from 30.2% marketshare to 31.9%.
Would love to see some global data. Data from just one country isn't all that interesting.
Last I saw, Apple had about 23% globally in smartphone marketshare. That's up from 17% last year. Andoid went from about 36.5% last year to about 56%. Those numbers were from Gartner late May.
Oh, and late 2010, Gartner said that Apple would peak in 2012 at 20.5%.

Well there was last quarters worldwide data where the iPhone 4s outshipped the SIII by a cpouple of million units while the iPhone 5 outshipped the SIII by double. So this looks at least at first glance like a continuation of that pattern. Similar in some respects to last year where the SIII only outshipped the 4s in, IIRC, August. Part of what is going to make this year more of a challenge, the 4s had a year that will be a tough act to follow. On the other hand all those 2 year 4s contracts will be up at the end of Summer.....
