Powerbooks (possibly iBook too?) update soon...
<a href="http://Powerpage.org" target="_blank">Powerpage.org</a> says that new powerbooks are showing up next week (April 30).
Checking out smalldog, it appears they are almost out of new Powerbooks. It also looks like most iBooks are backordered. Perhaps they will be updated soon as well?

<strong>I hope that the date is true, but I hope that's the only true part of the report. They are claiming that the update will only be a processor and hard drive bump, nothing more, not even GPU. I surely hope they don't release it with the same Radeon Mobility that's in it now. Must be able to play games from couch....</strong><hr></blockquote>
You really exppect a new graphics chip? How long was the Rage 128 in the PB? The last Ti revision just got this Radeon Mobility so I wouldn't hold your breath.

That was because better graphics chips didn't exist then.

Here in Australia we are paying AU$7000 for a top of the line laptop....$7000!!!!!!!....and Apple thinks it can ask this money and only put a 16MB GPU and everything is cool!!!???
What a joke!! The competition is starting to lap you guys...wake up Apple!!
Basically we know that there are SOI 7445's with comparable power dissapation figures to the chips in use now. We know that those chips run up to 1Ghz, and we know that they are listed right on Mot's web page.
800, 933 and 1Ghz parts suitable for laptop use not only exist, but are in production, and available for purchase. Will Apple use them? Who knows? Why give people an up-to-date laptop when we can nickle and dime them with hideously slow incremental updates?
The PPC itself is a case of Moore's Law @ half speed, but to not use a part when it is availble, especially considering the growing performance deficit, that's just stupid.
The machines should be 800, 933, 1Ghz. If there's a heat problem then fix the case or get a smaller process chip, or both.
667 and 800 will be very dissapointing unless it's followed VERY QUICKLY by a more substantial increase at MWNY. There's still the issue of a middling graphics chip and display resolution in a high end laptop with an even higher-end price tag.
As far as the predicted upgrade goes: if true, it means no new PB for 90-odd days after April 30th. Apple doesn't have to do any significant engineering or modification to its assembly lines to roll this out, so they don't have to keep it going for very long.
This pretty much means new PowerBooks at or after MWNY. They'll probably be thoroughly new, too, if it's taking Apple this long to finish them.

This 600Mhz G3 chip is total $hit for OSX. Zo hates this computer for the price zo paid.

What the heck, guess I'll just wait out the announcement on the 6th before I go shopping since I've already waited this long.

Is it Apple's fault that the Aussie Peso has performed so poorly lately? Is your minister of finance running OSX, I bet he is a wintel man judging from the value of your dollar!
The Ultimate machine is $5819 in Canadian Rubles, and actually the faster machine is $7000AU, the ultimate is actually $8634AU. Now I see your point you are getting hosed nearly $1000USD for shipping down under even with your pitifull exchange rate (our $ is not far behind).
We Canadians can only complain about the exchange, you have every right to complain about the extra $1000USD markup. Is that normal in Australia? By the way, I hope your dollar continues it recent recovery.

<strong>And no bluetooth?! Well, I was only switching over for OS X anyways, looks like I may go intel/linux after all for my portable.</strong><hr></blockquote>No Bluetooth? Apple is doomed!
When have we seen Apple speed bump by 300 or 400 mhz at one time?
Perhaps I'd feel compelled to picking one up even at only 800mhz if they addressed some of the other issues with the Powerbook i.e. resolution, DVI out, heat, paint, rigidity, etc...
you get my drift.
