I feel poor for all the iMac whiners, wanting to upgrade components themselves. In an All-in-One PC! How stupid is that?

Oh yes, if you're an existing Mac Pro owner who bought their computer back in 2010 then it's excellent value. But if you're a business that needs to buy a Mac Pro you are screwed. Either buy a machine with Shite specs for an exorbitant price or hang on......

I go with the former. Especially if my business needs a new PC. The specs aren't the latest and greatest, but all in all I think the Mac Pro in general is the best buy. It is for many the cheapest Mac as well, considering you don't replace your display when buying a new Mac. And they last really long.

It's embarrassing that you believe this expected shortage story. This is banded around with every Apple release and over everything that Apple sell, this is the one least likely to have issues.

Apple know that if they spread the rumour that there'll be shortages, people won't "leave a purchase until tomorrow" in case they don't get their one before Christmas.

I've never had any issues getting the new Apple products from my Apple store the week after they are released, Apple just like to add a bit of panic, it pleases the shareholders.

Doubtful that the 21.5 inch model will be popular, considering the memory is not upgradable and the hard drive is crippled at 5,400 RPM.

Unless the memory is soldered on I'll reserve judgement until I see how easy or hard it is to get into.  If it's not upgradable then I'll either find a 2011 iMac and live without USB3 or pony up for the low end 27".

I can't wait to get my hands on a 27" iMac. It is interesting they aren't even selling the old ones in the stores.

I was surprised by that. I guess they could have a lot of returns when the new one comes out in a few weeks.

If the notebooks made up 80% of the 4.9 million that means there are less than million for their iMacs, Mac Pros and Mac minis (which is less than Apple TV sales). I bet the Mac mini account for most of their desktop machines sales so that leaves the iMac and Mac Pro picking up the rear.

I bet the 21.5" sells the most between the iMacs so I'm not surprised they aren't getting me my 27" iMac tomorrow.

One ownership poll suggests the numbers are roughly:

    MBP 52%
    MB/Air 28%
    iMac 15%
    Mini 3%
    MP 3%

Although, that's ownership in a gaming community and the Mini will be higher in server use, it's probably an accurate representation and I've seen a similar distribution in other polls. If you try to buy a Mini setup with display and keyboard from an Apple Store, the setup costs more than the equivalent iMac. The 21.5" iMac is the bestselling Apple desktop on Amazon.

Disabling the purchase option would be justified on the grounds of marketshare for the Mini and MP but not the iMac IMO. It's only a few weeks though so not a huge deal.

That's possible. It's just that fast drives are one of the more popular upgrades in that market segment, as in those that aren't chasing the absolute fastest cpus on the market at any given time. If they were, they wouldn't be looking at the 21.5". Given the size of that enclosure, I'm not surprised, but it strikes me as one of those things where it was really designed for an ssd. They just may not have the appropriate capacities available within the margins they want to make.

I'd expect the numbers to look a lot different in areas where gaming performance is a non issue. While the gpu is used for other things as well, the Air and imac wouldn't be that great for games. All it shows here is that people gaming on them typically went for discrete graphics options, although the 13" mbp may also be represented somewhat. The mac pro was never a good option there unless you already owned one for other purposes.
