The Nexus 4, Google's latest flagship handset, went on sale Tuesday and got off to a respectable start, reaching 200,000 units in the first few minutes of availability.

People familiar with sales of the Nexus 4 revealed to AppleInsider on Tuesday that Google sold through 200,000 units almost immediately. The device is available contract-free through the Google Play store for $299 for the 8 gigabyte model, and $349 for a 16-gigabyte variety.

The Nexus 4 went on sale Tuesday at noon, and almost immediately customers in both the U.S. and abroad were unable to order the device, after initial availability presumably ran dry. Google declined to provide exact sales figures, but said in a statement that it had "sold out of some" of its initial stock of Nexus devices, which also include the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, in "a few countries."

"We are working hard to add more Nexus devices to Google Play in the coming weeks to keep up with the high demand," the company said.

The purported sales figures suggest the Nexus 4 may have a better performance in the market than its predecessor, the Nexus S manufactured by Samsung. While Google's Nexus phone have gained buzz among technology enthusiasts, their sales have been relatively small.

Samsung revealed as part of its patent dispute with Apple that it only sold about 500,000 Nexus S phones in the U.S. between the device's launch in December of 2010 and the court filing in June of 2011.

The search giant's latest flagship phone, and the successor to the Nexus S, is a result of a partnership with LG. The Nexus 4 has a quad-core processor and a 4.7-inch display that packs in 320 pixels per inch. The device also allows wireless inductive charging without the need to plug in wires.

The device launched Tuesday in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Canada. In addition to the contract-free variety sold directly through Google, a subsidized version of the Nexus 4 is available through U.S. carrier T-Mobile for $199 with a two-year service contract.
