This is somewhat disappointing.  However, we and third parties will figure out ways to deal with this inconvenience.  I had plans to put a 27" iMac in one of our edit suites on the same arm currently holding a 30" Cinema Display via VESA mount and adapter.  Fortunately the console is very flexible and I will be able to swap out some modular parts and just place the iMac on a filler panel.  Not my first choice, but it will work.

I will say that I personally find the new iMac physical design a bit overdone on the manufacturing tip.  The whole friction stir welding thing, the glued case, the non-removable stand/mount etc. and who know what else.  I admire the effort made to achieve all these things, but feel like they may have taken it a little too far past the practicality line.  Apple wants to make the best things in the world and for the most part they do when you look at the balance they achieve between form, function, price, beauty and desirability.  This time I feel something is just a little bit out of balance.
