PS: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE NO ONE QUIP WHAT MICHAEL DELL SHOULD DO WITH THE COMPANY. WE HAVE HEARD IT FOR A DECADE NOW SINCE APPLE WAS RISING AND DELL WAS FALLING.
Too late; I already did in that other thread where it was mentioned.
His just deserts? No, no. He's just in the desert, and may he wander for years.
What a mess. Maybe Microsoft will buy them and turn themselves into a PC mfg and then rear end HP and all of the Asian companies by closing off Microsoft WIndows from being sold as an OEM, install on clone computer OSs, so they have to go only through Microsoft to buy hardware/software.
Lenovo copies the MBP and other designs and is rising,
Hp copies the MBP in a disgusting way (envy lol) and is rising,
Asus copies the air and other designs and is rising,
Samsung copies the air, the mini, etc and is rising,
Meanwhile, when Dell was trying to up their game (they even launched a phone..) and stoping making crap, supports ubuntu, etc, the marketplace and IT world doesn't care, because it isn't neither cheap or Apple clones.
The WIntel and IT world must disappear, they feed each other. Only Apple and maybe Google can change it.
How has Lenovo copied anything? I can kind of see your logic on the others, but Lenovo's designs are in line with their earlier work. It seems likely that you didn't pay attention to them until you decided something looked similar to an Apple product.

Take a look at their site directly. They don't market themselves like Apple. You picked out one from Best Buy that looks similar and suggest that it's a copy as well as the reason for their change in marketshare relative to Dell. They have a wide range of designs, and even if you're convinced this one is a copy, it means very little to the financial trends of the company as a whole.
Doesn't Dell have a higher market share than Apple? That means winning, right?
If HP, Dell, and Lenovo agreed to all raise their margins to the same level, they'd all be doing each other a favour. They've gotten into a silly race to be the cheapest and they're all suffering for it. Their brands are strong enough that they can do this quite easily, just slap $100 on top of every model, nobody would even notice.

I'm pretty sure that would fall under price-fixing.

You beat me to it. It would fall under some type of collusion. You may remember LG and Samsung recently accused of this on lcd panels. Those are also mostly low margin items.
It might be a smart plan. Being a publicly traded company does have draw backs. If it is private, the owners will have more control over the company. If Apple dropped low enough in value, Apple would likely consider the same move.

Sounds great, except that is what the government is suing the publishers selling on iBooks for allegedly doing (and Apple). That is called collusion, and it is illegal.
To be fair to Lenovo, it is following Intel's Apple knock off specification for an Ultrabook. Hence, pretty much all the Ultrabooks look similar. Personally, I am surprised Apple let Intel get away with passing off Apple's design as the Ultrabook specification. Intel essentially is undermining one of its partners (namely Apple).

If you're going to throw money away, that's the correct figure.

Walmart won't let them do that!

Going private means Dell doesn't have to share profits. Dell actually makes money on servers.
