Apple has begun promoting self-published titles on the iBookstore under the banner of "Breakout Books."

iBooks

The new section on the iTunes Store is advertised by Apple as a "hand-picked collection of books from emerging talents." The company has promised to add new titles regularly.

"All are independently published and have earned high ratings from customers like you," the page reads.

Titles are available in the categories "Romance," "Sci-Fi & Fantasy," "Mysteries & Thrillers," and "More to Explore." Each can be sorted by the best selling titles or release date.

So that "Someone To Love" there, that's… one of those… Well, anyway.

Great to see that there are a sizable number of books created and published directly in iBooks. Apple really needs to keep the pressure on in adding features to iBooks Author. Automation of a lot of the processes already there would be a great start. Make indexing a term as easy as going through Faces in iPhoto, for one.

Yeah, that screenshot doesn't really do it justice. image The other genres are cut off entirely.
