As everyone has stated, it's a great little piece of innovation. I can only imagine that every device maker will start using it, and bet that the courts will invalidate Apple's patent.
Those are the same button combinations used on the iphone headphones... double tap hold, triple tap hold etc.
Yup! In addition to being familiar, this would allow people using headphones with no remote the same luxury. Maybe not QUITE as convenient as having the control on the cord, but pretty close.

Presumably, everyone will only tap in their own trousers and should therefore not be surprised.
