I don't use Facebook, and resent it being listed as a send option in iOS.
But I hope this comes to the iPhone - it would have to be an App. People who want it could install it. And those who dislike it needn't bother. Otherwise FaceBook obsessives may migrate to Android.
But it's another move towards more interactive and functional Launchers/Home Pages. Apple fixed grids of icons is uninformative, lacks functionality and many customisation options. I'm hoping for improvement here in iOS 7.
After watching my 14 year old daughter and her obsession with Facebook I reckon this could have quite an influence on the Apple vs Samsung preferences of that generation. Unfortunately for her, she only gets our cast-offs so she's 'stuck' with Apple until she starts buying her own phones. But yes, I think Zuckerbrrg is on a winner here - for the Facebook generation.
Maybe but if it is such a winner Facebook should be doing an entire OS and also the Phone Hardware themselves! Is Zuckerberg being too timid? Or are they smart to just test the waters? They are at the mercy of Google and Android by not taking bigger steps! With that said, I don't really understand this products appeal yet?
People really do need to get a life! It is also ironic that this Facebook clusterfk_k won't work in the home country of three of these manufacturers - ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei. Yes, that would be China.
This kinda reminds of AOLs buddy thingieme back in the day.
Fcuk - who cares if Joes online?
If I want to send him a message I can call, text, email, FaceTime et al.
Info overload imnsho.
Yet another worthless nifty trick from FB.
Thank god it's only available on Android.
Facebook paid half a billion dollars for half the AOL portfolio. I'm sure the worthless buddy patents were part of the portion Facebook received from Microsoft. They probably think they are monetizing their patent portfolio.
I also prefer it when my data plan is siphoned by everyone else's instagram updates and "news."
Yep. And unless you live in the 15 largest US cities, data speeds are likely slow enough that your battery life will be about an hour, for the pathetic trickle speed of background data streaming keeping the Edge/3G/4G radio powered on.

Isn't it already an app? With a small amount of OS integration, even.

There is precedent. Apple is known for testing the waters, with iPod games preceding digital delivery via the App Store, iTunes on the Motorola ROKR preceding the iPhone, etc.

Facebook have just introduced a way to get targeted advertising on the home screen of your phone - even google didn't do this.
i hate Facebook so much, 95% of the posts on my newsfeed are such crap I find it depressing to even check my account.
Amazon got home screen ads on the Kindle, running a forked Android.
Try Twitter. It's like vegan Facebook, and most importantly, it lacks the implied obligation to Friend everyone you've ever met. I unfollowed a few of my acquaintances who only tweet about sports, but we can still view and message each other on demand, without navigating any monstrous privacy controls.

That is really what it's all about for Facebook and Google - selling you and your information to the highest bidder and getting targeted ads in front of your face.
You can filter out a lot of the crap from your Facebook newsfeed, but it requires quite a bit of customization on your part. Every time I see a post or an invitation from a game or app or page that I did not solicit, I try to block that app or page. Eventually the spam subsides, but it's an ongoing process. The only reason I'm on Facebook is to connect with friends and family that don't seem to want to communicate any other way.

No single phone will ever win them all. But an app, or an app suite could.
Not too timid. Just too smart.
If he ever makes an entire OS or a phone, he would be making a hubris-based blunder. Look at Google and their OS - how much money are they making by having Android in the majority of the smartphone market?
As for being at the mercy of Google, let's see how they respond to this first.
I can see how this *might* appeal to people who are constantly on Facebook. There are people out there who spend most of their "mobile" time on Facebook rather than on the web in general.
Facebook has basically become the new AOL - an all encompassing Internet entity. The problem with these services is that they tend to shift from community to commerce and begin to build user resentment. Eventually they collapse in on themselves as users move to newer more exclusive services.
True, but there is still a depressingly large amount of AOL users to this day. About 3 million more than you might have expected.
I don't know what will rise from Facebook's crumbling dust. A paid social network would have even fewer users than G+, and a truly 'open' one will be limited to the tech-heavy crowd.
Unfortunate for HTC, but rumors are flying that the "Facebook Phone" a.k.a. HTC First, being marketed by ATT is set for the discontinued bin. Just like the Facebook Home app (2 stars last I knew) the HTC First with Facebook isn't getting any love either. It's not the hardware but the Facebook integration that's the problem.
The HTC Status didn't sell so well either. That's the one with a physical keyboard and dedicated Facebook button.
Shift timelines slightly and we might have seen a Myspace phone or Google Plus laptop, neither of which sound attractive. It's almost as though hardware shouldn't be based on a single social network.
Also contrast: visual professionals using Final Cut or Adobe keyboard overlays, versus purpose-built World of Warcraft keyboards.

From that article ^^^, apparently Facebook didn't realize that even people who liked FB, wanted to ALSO use other apps as well:
" Widgets, docks, and folders are very important to the Android experience, but Facebook failed to take note,"
The HTC Status didn't sell so well either. That's the one with a physical keyboard and dedicated Facebook button.
