Strange release.. ( Did the sound engineer run out of things to do in his works hours? )
Agreed. I don't recall Apple ever doing something quite like this. I suspect there will be further patching to iOS 6 in the future, at least from a bug or security aspect, that could feasibly include this audio enhancement. Perhaps they they forgot to mention the additional Jail breaking prevention updates included in this version.
Sort of made me think they just needed to do some testing on their update system infrastructure, or something, prior to releasing "The Big One".
This happened to me once on my 5. The only way I could hang up the call was to power it down.
I do know that if you turn it off during a phone call(on 4 at least) you risk your screen frozen when back on, the way to cure that is turn it off again,(so these software bugs might be time consumming).
My "end" button doesn't work to end the call, unless i use my power button. This update didn't fix it.
I'm willing to bet you have a case on your phone, possibly a lifeproof first generation, and that's causing the issue. If so, remove it and try it out.
hi, Apple has released a minor software update for the iPhone 5. It features only one noted change. iOS 6.1.4 is available only for iPhone5 which includes updated audio profile for speakerphone. to view information click here......http://www.iphone5-applications.com
one of the features that i'm waiting for them to turn back on, ever since iOS 6, is the ability to start playing iTunes from the song you left off on. i have a massive music collection and i love to shuffle/listen through it. this was possible in previous iOS's, but ever since iOS 6, it starts at the beginning of the play list every time. i know it's a small thing, but i never realized how much i loved it until i didn't have it.

I never use speakerphone anyway so no. Not even going to bother with this "update."
