Unfortunately, very early on Google determined that Apple users were doing the bulk of the browsing... far more then their proportion of handsets. Now, since Apple is moving to marginalize Google apps from Apple users, Google is losing more and more data (that drives their pricing to advertising clients) Google is working hard to make up for the shortfall with such things as "Chrome."

I don't expect that Google will lose quickly nor Apple win quickly, but the above information is crucial to seeing how the struggle for user data is playing out... whether you understand its significants or not.

I don't understand the significance. I think it's because the issue really isn't significant, but I'm willing to concede ignorance of the process if someone can demonstrate how knowing the ratio of operating systems browsing the web either benefits or hurts either Google or Apple. Since you used Google as an example, let's go with them. I present Google with a report that says iOS devices account for roughly twice as much web browsing as Android devices. As a Google executive, what do you do with that information?

You are flinging you opinion out as if it has any validity since it's only basis is other of your opinions.

Find a different thread where you might understand the very basics of what it is about.

Lighten up, Francis. That's humor there son.

It really doesn't matter to me whether or not you share my opinion of the report or the article. Take what you want from my comments and dismiss what you don't. I'm not basing my opinion on vapor though, I'm struggling to come up with a single scenario in which that information would actually benefit someone.

I've seen some generalities about data gathering, but no specifics regarding how this information relates to data gathering, what data is being lost, or how it affects Google's advertising rates.

You seem to be saying you DO understand what this is about, so it shouldn't be too hard to make me look exactly as stupid as I say I am. See my previous post asking for an example of how one would respond to this "information."

Or don't. Feel free to disagree. Just don't posture and puff then. If you're gonna hurl insults, put up or shut up.

    Edit: Corrected reference to "Stripes."

I don't doubt you. My point is that knowing that does nothing to improve your business, help with planning, teach you how to earn more money from home in your spare time or deal with the heartbreak of psoriasis. Accurate or not, it's a meaningless data point.

Business executives rarely if ever tell their people to ignore data points when developing marketing strategies. For example from the analytics I provided one could make business decisions such as should we develop a mobile app and if so which platform should we start with. Speaking of which we just had that discussion and it was decided to create an iPad app first based on the data gleaned from Google Analytics.

If they ads on the page, you can target to specific devices. In addition you charge companies more to place ads on your website if iOS frequents it more than android. iOS users tend to buy more stuff.

That's an easy one.  As a Google executive, realizing that mobile will be responsible for an increasing amount of web traffic in the future, I make sure that I have the leading platform by usage market share, iOS, completely covered.  Basically, I make every effort to make every Google service and app available to iOS users, and encourage iOS users to use the Google ecosystem for everything.

Google has repeatedly been updating and adding features to its iOS Gmail and Chrome apps among others.  They brought over a version of Google Maps that completely blew away the previous built-in maps app their data powered in iOS5 & previous.  They brought over Google Now, at least to the extent that iOS allows.  They're adding links from one Google app to another.

In many ways, the experience for a huge Google ecosystem user like myself is better on an iPhone 5 than it is on an Android phone (especially pre-Jelly Bean Androids that can't use Google Now).  The biggest downside is that you can't use Google's Voice Assistant without opening the Google Search app.  However, things like Gmail and Google Maps actually are more responsive on an iPhone 5 than on the GS3 I've tested.

Google has had this type of data on iOS user activity for years, so this particular report doesn't represent anything new.  But it's clear that they've been acting on this information for a long time.

I have a big pond and farmers field near my home.  Tons of rabbits.  Tons of turtles.  That is a nice story they tell 3 year olds.  The rabbit gets to exactly where it wants go WWWAAAAaaaayyy faster than the turtle 99.999% of the time.   Seriously.
