Based on my experience working on iDevice repairs, this is absolutely relevant. On many actuators, apple uses a small piece of foam to bridge the gap from the plastic button to the control cable inside the unit. Over time, the adhesive wears off, the piece of foam moves, and the button no longer reaches, disabling the part.
I've seen it on iPhone and iPod Touch power buttons, and a lot on 5th generation iPods with the home button. Anytime apple uses a piece of foam on the cable, the part eventually goes bad.
Sorry guys, but it's just bad design on Apple's part. I'm just surprised this is only coming up now, instead of several years ago.
You could be right (about it being a design that wasn't as robust as it could have been). Oh well. If it's not that button that fails in 2 years, it would be something else that fails in 3 year. And someone could point to a design improvement that would have mitigated THAT problem. And so on. These are not artificial hearts we're talking about here. They are consumer devices with a 1 (or 2) year warranty. Hopefully Apple improves (or has improved) the design in later models, but I see no reason for getting courts involved. Unless you can show me the ad that said "Our iPhones are so well designed the buttons are guaranteed to last 5 years!" (And in that case Apple would have backed it up with a 5 year button warranty to demonstrate their confidence in that claim.)
If this button issue makes you believe that Apple isn't to be trusted as a competent hardware designer/provider, then try another company. The fact that Apple consistently has the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the industry (both industries) suggests to me that you'd be making a bad choice, but it's your choice.
So? You in that country, the promise Apple makes is 2 years. If you think Apple should warrant the device longer than what they promise, then don't buy it.
According to the court document, first discovered by GigaOm, the plaintiff alleges the flex cable dedicated to power button operation slowly deteriorates, making it increasingly difficult to press. After a certain number of actuations, the component completely fails, rendering much of the iPhone 4 useless.
I'm wondering why the power button is being used.
The only time I EVER use my power button is to take a screen shot!
Perhaps a bit of education on how to effectively use an iPhone would be more helpful!

My "perfect" iPhone 4 is now 28 months old, the contract is for 36 months- 3 yrs.
Power button is fine, but the home button started the occasional difficulty. I'm crossing my fingers, however I only use the power button for screen shots. Why the hell does any iPhone user use the power button frequently?
A year ago I discovered the Accessibility Setting, which replaces most of the Home Button function and is often more convenient to use.
I've have this I-phone 4 POS. And it did not take long for the ON/OFF button to fail. I took my I-pos to the Apple Location here in OMaha, @ Village Point and they wanted $199.00 to fix the ON/OFF button. Today, and more than a 10 months ago and I still can not ON/OFF this POS. Any ONE HERE who wants to kiss apple's core.....wanna buy my I-4-POS?
I have found a phone repair Specialist who can repair it for $40.00 and APPLE wanted $199: a rip-off!

They understand the "battle" is between people and their wits.
