I'm sorry, who the **** wants a thinner iPad mini? No, I mean seriously? I use a case on mine because I feel it's TOO thin to handle comfortably, and is already light as a feather. Leave it the same damn thickness so its easier to throw in the retina components.
I'm not sure about a 'bezel-free' iPad - the bezel is useful - stops one's thumbs from making accidental touch inputs...
Dissing Digitimes's record is a time-honored custom here, but if they're just speculating from whatever scraps, I'm sure, e.g., they've also watched Sharp's IGZO promo vid and read about Apple's newish patent to avoid unintentional inputs that's applicable to thin bezel or bezel-less devices...
One never knows, tho'....

Sounds like Apple's long-term plan.

My understanding is that the bezel size has to do with Apple "training" users in the new technology. For instance if the iPad had debuted with what will soon be the new standard of narrow side bezels, a lot of folks would fumble with it and endless news reports would have been written about this "hard to use" new touch technology and how frustrating it was for users. Whereas now, a few years later, everyone is already trained on how to use it and they can slowly reduce the bezel in size.
I think we will see it get even smaller over time, but I don't think it's possible to get rid of it entirely.
This will likely never happen, but my personal ideal bezel size would be like the current mini, but with a 50-60% reduction on the side bezel width, the same on the top, and a 80-100% *increase* on the bottom bezel. I don't think they will ever go asymmetrical like that given the whole "rotate the device" thing though.
Apple evolves us so we can evolve Apple. Cool. And with you on your stalker, btw.... ....and your opinion on the over-hyping of retina. Very nice, however, my "mind's eyes" adapt pretty much to whatever screen I'm on, focusing on taking in the info in front of me, not pining for something that isn't.... ...from my 10 year old 12" iBook to a 4K demo.....
...and so I've love to see an iPad of any reasonable rez with say, an 18 hour battery life.....

I'm ready to pull the trigger on an iPad Mini but could wait till the fall for a newer, thinner one. I'll also upgrade my 4s to a 5s (white cuz it matches iOS7 so nicely!)
Retina on the iPad Mini is not that big a deal to me. It's wonderful on the iPhone. But I'd rather have the thinnest lightest iPad Mini Apple can make.
Purchases in 2013: New iPhone 5s, 11" MBA (for work), iPad Mini, ATV, and a TimeCapsule. New iWork suite.
Honestly the mini was necessary but it's not an optimal business move for Apple to bring out it out too soon or it will tank sales of the iPad 5.
The focus on the weight and bezels is to woo back customers like John Gruber who downgraded to the mini because these were more important than resolution. It would be better not to give the mini the primary feature that makes people like me still opt for a full size iPad, at least not until the iPad 5 has had a chance to reinforce itself as as the premium iPad experience. If they launch at the same time everyone will just move to the retina mini (which is better than them moving to android but still not ideal).
If we don't see a refresh to the mini in September I'd predict retina in Early 2014, if we do see an bump now, then no retina until September 2014.
Even though the non-retina screen on the mini makes me cringe a bit (I have iPad 3), I can see why it's so popular. It's a very sexy, light piece of hardware, and I would not be at all surprised to learn it's outselling it's older sibling. Which leads me to believe the mini will get sexier (thinner) and lighter, and maybe $29 cheaper, while retaining a non retina display to upsell the iPad 5 which will get similar treatment.

I think what the other poster is getting at is that for a while your posts were incessantly, and almost without exception, negative. But IMHO I've felt your posts have gotten a lot better. You've done a good job defending your positions oftentimes, and I usually appreciate your perspective. One thing I still don't get is the nitpicking at DED articles. Your mutual back and forth with him aside, I don't think it's a big deal to have a few errors, or for him to vociferously defend what are very insightful and well researched articles. I enjoy Corrections almost as much as the article. Some of those errors are pretty funny though, makes me think they might be deliberate. Cheers.
Apple just knows how to milk out profit margins! iPad5 has much higher profit margin then it brother iPad Mini. Apple will release the iPad5 in September; do a refresh on the iPad Mini 2 without Retina and wait till all the iPad5 sales dry up and then the iPad Mini Retina in 2nd Quarter 2014!

Really, Harry.
Im sure there's a stroke of genius in you somewhere.
Yet to be revealed, however.

What you're describing sounds like a Newton.
