Gee, what a great ad... For Siri!

Why on Earth does Microsoft devote so much air time to a competitor's feature Surface simply doesn't have? Maybe Apple should make an ad showing a Surface with keyboard, mouse, DVD burner or maybe even a floppy disk drive (because you can!, Why?), inkjet, and networking hardware all pugged into it; all set up on desk, of course, vs. an iPad doing most of those things with its built-in screen, not tied to anything (aka WIRELESSLY), and being used anywhere.

Oh yah, and maybe talking to a Surface... And not getting any response.

The price comparison leaves out the fact that you need to buy the typing cover extra for the surface, yet describes it as a major feature.  On the other hand one of the "major" points they make against the iPad is that it can't stand up, but if they included the iPad cover, of course it can.  Also, while they include the keyboard accessory for the Surface in order to say that it comes with a keyboard, they don't include or mention the fact that the iPad has a USB accessory that will make it read the USB stick.  It's completely twisted, purposely misleading and basically comparing Apple's to Oranges.

To me these days most ads feel more like warnings than enticements (especially for fast food and the like).

That said, they're sitting on likely 2M + of these units they have to get out the door before the next model they've committed to making for RT 8.1....  ...so they're obviously feeling "they got to move these refrigerators"... ...by any tactics they think will help (whether they do or not).

You can give Surface commands via voice and do voice dictation. Personally I never liked using Siri or any other voice command software.

Kinda like those geniuses who giggle and somehow think they're clever every time someone says "dump" or "wood."

Not having peripherals is good, the iPad doesn't need peripherals. Less clutter, less cost, and less things to carry along with iPad.

There's four, the "mini's" have been discontinued and the majority of devices now just use Micro-B. The new Micro USB 3 will just have one adapter type. There were a few companies that did make their own Mini USB adapters like HTC but they stopped doing it to adhere to a single standard, Micro-B.

    700

    USB Micro 3.0
    700

I just bought a current model Sony NEX camera, it came with mini USB.

Using a different mini USB cable wouldn't allow a firmware update, I had to use the supplied one.

I don't want two connectors on my iPad, I want one, one that can handle HDMI, USB and whatever comes along in future.

Never underestimate the effect of wetware, I've seen plenty of damaged micro USB ports and cables which have been subject to forcing the plug in the wrong way.

Lightening is so much better in this regard.

I just checked the current Sony NEX line, most models have already moved on to Micro-B except for their cheapest model the Nex-3N. Sony will update that as well as all of their USB accessories are now Micro-B.

    NEX-6 2013

I love being able to connect a straight HDMI cable into my phone, it's just so much more convenient than having to drag along another adaptor. That and the Lightning Digital AV Adapter sucks, video quality is subpar, no 1080p, expensive, I long for a raw HDMI connection.

The iPad/iPhone have the most peripherals than any other gadgets on the market.

I have the NEX 7, top of the range.

    It's mini USB.

    Edit: error correction.

You mean Mini, Micro is the newer one and you're right, sorry I missed that one but the NEX-7 was released in late 2011 making it the oldest in the lineup and it is getting an update in the next few months and will definitely be Micro-B, Sony has discontinued the use of Mini-B as has every other company, they started doing this early last year, the new standard is Micro-B.

Do you like it, I have been looking at one too. I can't decide over the Sony or the Nikon 1 V2. How is it in low light?

I guess in anticipation for the new model Amazon and many other online shops are giving away instant rebates and even accessories, so it looks like a great time to buy.

It's awesome, I updated an old NEX 5 , as I already had three lenses.

Sony is set to announce it's successor in the fall which is rumoured to have a full sized sensor among other things, including no doubt, micro USB ;)

Oh my gosh a full sensor, that's Canon 5D territory, so cool. Sony sure knows how to make a great prosumer camera, thanks for the tip.

It's not buried, bring up the Charms on the right and just tap the little icon of the screen once, done.

Are they magically delicious? And what do you do with all the pesky leprechauns? Sounds like a hassle.

So Microsoft is demonstrating that you need to carry around a bunch of additional crap to make their tablet useful? I'm sure that will work out just fine... image

Don't be so obtuse, they demonstrated ONE peripheral, a clip on keyboard. The Surface RT or Pro work just fine without one.
