You could do much more robust action games (higher FPS, resolution, etc.) that had an iDevice component and an AppleTV component. AirPlay (or whatever) would just need to exchange location coordinates and status [changes] between the two devices -- rather than exchange the entire shitscreenload of data. You could have some fantastic multiplayer games. The ATV app component could be stored in your iTunes Library and cross-loaded when desires.
Is time lost due to data transmission an issue anymore with 802.11ac? You'd know better than I.
The best way to answer the need for bandwidth is an old Naw'Lins saying: "Too much is never enough!".
Other uses for native app components on the ATV include presos containing graphics, animation, etc. Very useful for business , medical, military, education…
Aha! A standalone Keynote player for Apple TV! Have it pull down your account's Keynote presentations that you've stored in iCloud! Very nice!
Or a doctor sharing XRays and scan images with others...
Or the history teacher presenting the Battle of Thermopylae (or the scenes from 911) overlaid on renditions of maps of the era, then compared to live maps of today...
Or Military war gaming -- My company won a $1 million bid with the US Army in the mid 1980s (100 computers in 10 Classroom LANs). Today that could be done much, much better with 10 Macs, 10 ATVs, and 100 iPads for less than 1/10 the cost. Not to mention the much better capabilities for custom programming.
How so? It's just like any other feature of outputting OS X or iOS to your TV.
How do you play something from your NAS? I don't run itunes all the time and when I do it tends to disconnect, it is on a windows machine after all. Many of the videos I get from TV stations are using Flash so an iOS device simply won't work.

Every time this comes up, I keep asking why you need one. No one ever has an answer worth the bytes needed to host it. "Well, native apps." That's not an answer. And good luck controlling them with a D-pad and one button. "Well, new touchscreen remote." It's called every iDevice on the market right now, which then goes back to the original question of why you wouldn't just use the apps already on said device.
So why do you need one? AirPlay lets you have the entire App Store on your Apple TV already. There aren't any "apps" that make sense to put on Apple TV alone that won't be available from Apple as Channels eventually.
Being able to stream from Amazon Prime would be a nice addition for me.
This. The AppleTV app store will be a 'channel' purchaser. you go to the store, select your 'channels', and put them up on your screen. The app store, curated by Apple will effectively be the imprimatur that it's content that Apple wants you to see on your Apple TV.
HOWEVER. the 'iTV' secret sauce will be the ability for Apple to search for content within these channels.
I want a search button on the Apple TV that allows me the following intelligence
Please search NetFlix, iTunes, Amazon Prime for 'Breaking Bad' and provide a clickable links to each episode in most recent first, quality of content (1080 vs 720 5.1 vs 2.1 etc), and list cost of watching.
and
Please search (Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, YouTube, ThePirateBay, Local storage) for all shows with 'Ed Begley, Jr.' listed as an cast member.
Please send me a notification (icloud) when new content loads matching Search X.
among other search functions
Having a ton of apps into various data stores does me nothing if there isn't a Search API that Apple enforces that allows these channels to become part of a singular, immersive experience.
I don't mind spending $4.99 for an iTunes or Amazon Prime Movie, but I hate to spend it if I've already bought it through my Netflix subscription.

Not true- I gave you a couple reasons in a previous thread and you agreed. I just don't remember what it was- but I'm sure it was great. Lol
I know one was a screensaver app with sports scores or news scroll, Photostream, and whatever music streamer of your choice. Maybe the other was karaoke. Hah
imo the Apple TV app store will feed on iphone apps, not ipad apps. But even on ipads, video will resize to 16:9 once you hit play. For mirroring ipad apps it sucks indeed.
A lot of games will glitch over airplay too. I see many reasons to open a native app store. Especially with the game controller API Apple introduce at WWDC. Also, openning the app store will allow to install HTPC style apps without jailbreak. Those apps will allow to stream from network drives like timecapsuled. Major improvement imo.
What I would like to see is new hardware with an A5X and 16/32/64/128 SSD options. With this and an App store Apple would enter the game console market for starters. imo a $49 game controller would do a better job at controlling everthing then the actual remote.
I said "unless serious software changes are made".
Of course you'd need a faster chip then. But until that day, there's no need to upgrade it.
Many of the videos I get from TV stations are using Flash so an iOS device simply won't work.
The network I work for uses flash for video delivery via our web site. No amount of screaming and complaining and stomping our feet will get the corporate IT cabal to listen. They like Flash because they get built-in DRM and, as a convenient side-effect, Ad-Blocker prevents videos from playing at all so if you want to see our video you have to watch our ads too.
[...] I don't run itunes all the time and when I do it tends to disconnect
Yeah, what's that about? I hit Play in iTunes, select AirPlay, and at some point (half-an-hour or so?) it just stops. Is this an AirPlay thing or an iTunes thing?
FileBrowserLite app : I was able to connect to my TimeCapsuled (blank username, wifi password) and Airplay .mp4 or .m4v video files from my ipad to the Apple TV without requiring to have any computer on. It reads TimeCapsuled directly.

Personally, I only want video and audio options (Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Instant, ESPN, HBO Go, Showtime, Netflix). But I also know the only way to get a unified search is to have those apps natively on Apple TV. There are so many other audio and video apps that arent mentioned- and if Apple opened up the doors- it would allow for all users to download whatever A/V apps they want- and if those apps develop for it (and apple allows it to be done)- be able to use a unified search function. Even though that sounds small- that would be huge. Imagine looking for "Sons of Anarchy season 5" and no streaming programs have it, but you could purchase from itunes for $X. Good all the way around.
All of this is only possible with an App Store. Up for debate on how regulated or the type of apps Apple would allow.

Oh, I see. Silly that it's still used instead of H.264 streaming, huh.

Agreed!
A NAS includes a file server.

I like that.
Ah, that could be an easy addition to the existing screensavers. Send it in as a feature request!

Airplay doesn't work well for either of those.
Go spend 29 bucks and buy ATV Flash. It does all of that and more on your apple tv and is very stable and fast

Doesn't work with current ATVs.
Thanks for that link. Pity the v3 is still unavailable though. But they do say that it will be a free upgrade once they've cracked it.
